Well to start, Hello everybody lol I haven't posted in a long time. The car is running good except for a rattling sound coming from the engine at mid-high RPMs. I think it's the timing tensioner or idler..

The second thing on the list, I'm going to pop the question! That's correct, I'm going to be getting engaged, if she says yes that is lol.

Fix the car before you pop the question..LOL. Congrats on the upcoming self-inflicted gunshot wound to your player days. Cheaper to just live with them and love them than to marry them. Once you get married, some get too comfortable and the wonderful things she used to do for you will slow down to a minimal or completely stop. Anyways, fix the car  ......

thanks Dee, you got me all excited now... lol :P

as for the car, I plan on it. I'm working at Auto Value, whihc is a parts store like Autozone, so I can get mad discounts on everything! I'll have to look into it more but I'm sure i know what the problem is.

At what rpm are you hearing this rattle? The "death rattle" or "rod knock" normally starts at or around 2500rpm and is most notable at or around 300rpm. Hopefully it's not that! The other thing you need to be aware of is the upper timing cover. If you don't secure it with the provided allen key screws, it will make a nasty noise. Lastly, a loose alternator, but I seriously doubt it's this.

the rattle is definately above 3k, and is only noticable on decel. I'll check the timing cover bolts just incase, but it doesn't sound like anything that is coming from a rod or anything. Its a very high pitch rattle.

is this the death rattle you speak of? if so, it definately isn't that.

Check your exhaust. Recently on a drive from Pontiac to Chicago, i had 3 of the 4 nuts that hold the the turbo to the exhaust manifold come off! I noticed the exhaust tone changing and while the throttle response decreased. With the turbo free to move around, a rattle caused by the exhaust vibrating against the body/frame is what i believe caused my nuts to come loose.

Its fixed now thankfully. I replaced all nuts, gaskets, and locking tabs as per OEM instructions to prevent this from occurring in the future! I drove it 300 miles back that day, no problems so far.

that actually just happened to me not to long ago. I replaced the studs and have lock washers with thread locker on all of them. There was only one that I couldn't get to stay on, but its not leaking and has a brand new STEEL gasket. I still haven't looked into it but I will today.

one thing i did find today was that my o2 sensor was coming loose, so I did end up tightening that up lol

I used lock washers, regular nuts, and Loctite and they still came loose. It wasn't enough. I recommend you spend the extra $15 and buy a set of locking tabs/plates for the nuts that hold the turbo to the exhaust manifold. Also, get the best locking nuts you can find and replace all exhaust gaskets. My O2 sensor was also loose further proving my vibration theory.

its been holding up so far, so unless they come loose again, I'm not going to touch it. My motto, "if it aint broke, dont fix it". But I just went drifting and the rattle seems to be gone. I was killing it today for sure, i had so much fun. I <3 My CA18 S13 ;)
