Some new updated pictures showing various parts of the work. How do you like the interior? hehehe...

Notice the -lack- of hood clearance. 3" CF hood to fix that problem.

I'm not going to post the individual pics here since there are 10 of them, but here is the directory. Just browse at will, but be warned the images are 1290x960 or some huge size like that. Sorry about the quality, but they are the best I could get with my PDA right now. My buddies EOS Rebel is being fixed.. bent pins..

Feel free to comment/question/advice/complain/opinion, but I may not be able to answer very quickly since I have -alot- of work left to do on the car as you can tell, in the interior section mainly.

Peace.

Definitely looks like a 20 Intake manifold. Or did some RB25's come with different style intake manifolds?

Edit: Yeah, definitely looks like an RB20, despite the coil pack cover. The valve cover thingies don't have those odd humps on the rear, and the way the vaccuum hose runs over the top of the engine is ala 20, not 25. What's your ECU say? (the serial codes on the cover)

a 2500 cover plate on a rb20?

thats not a 25 manherehttp://www.imagestation.com/pi...g.jpg

look at the back of the valve covers specifically, hose routing, etc.did the engine come without a timing belt cover? ill bet it said RB20 on it thats why they pulled it off.

also look herehttp://img.photobucket.com/alb...c.jpg

that little bump under the other side of the timing belt cover (paralell to CAS) isnt just there for looks, thats the VTC. i see no evidence of that on your engine, and all RB25's had it.

I feel bad for you if they told you it was an RB25. I would be calling the place that sold it to you.

Dude, sorry to tell you, but you got took....

NO VVTRB20 intake maniRB20 intake pipingRB20 upper radiator hoseRB20 igniter....

You got bent over and ridden all the way home.

On the LT side(american drivers side) of the block, all the way at the rear is the block designation on a flat portion near the trans....check it and see if it says RB25 or RB20.....I bet RB20.

I just spent an hour and a half looking at an RB20DET right next to my engine, and they are -not- the same.

It's still possible it might be an RB20, but at this point it doesn't look like one. The CAS is different, the ignitors are different, the vacuum lines are different.. etc..

We have to check the ECU and get some sandpaper to clean off the plate to check for sure. We already know it doesn't say "RB20" like the other RB20 block does, and the other RB25's looked like this one.

If it's not a true RB25, then it isn't my shop's fault since the engine was shipped as one. You can say what you want, but it is not easy to tell an RB25 from an RB20 if you're not specifically checking for it or don't have reason to believe it might be falsely sold.

I will not post where the engine came from until it is clarified so that no bad information is spread around without just cause.

None of you have seen this block in person, so none of you really knows what it is yet. An RB20 owner who put the block in himself looked at it extensively today and he believes it's an RB25. The transmission is definitely NOT an RB20 transmission.

I didn't get ripped off. Even if it turns out to be an RB20, the shop is already prepared to pull it and get another. If it turns out to be an actual RB25, then I invite all of you to inspect it for yourselves at Nopi, and if it turns out to be an RB20, well then it should be a good lesson for everybody here, and I thank the sharp-eyed folks who questioned it. Either way, when it is all said and done, there WILL be an RB25 under the hood regardless of which this current block is.

I don't think anybody here can claim it's easy to tell the difference between any RB20 and any RB25 without the block plate. Especially on an imported clip like these come in. If you are really that skilled that you can tell from a picture, well pat yourself on the back.

I will post when I found out for sure. But after inspecting an RB20 firsthand right next to my Z, I'm swaying more towards it not being an RB20. But I definitely don't claim to be an expert.

My RB20 midway through swap.

Now your RB...

The only differences I see are one vaccuum hose connection and the lack of BOV on the upper pipe, both of which even a 25 should have. There's just something very weird about that engine, and its suppsoed RB25-ness. I'm glad the shop said they'll replace it thought if it's found to be an imposter.

Look at the difference. I spent 10 minutes looking at your picture compared to my car. Though this picture isnt of my car it is of an RB25DET and there are some noticable differences...At least on the head and cam covers, ect....

does anyone even know if a RB20 head will bolt to a RB25 block? because that is NOT a 25 head. could very well be a 25 block/transmission but not the head.

Ok, I've spent a good few hours combing the internet for information, and I have not been able to find out much of anything on the exact differences between the RB20 and 25, or specifically, how to tell them apart.

However, in my combings, I did find this R32 Skyline with a very odd engine. It appears to have an engine just like mine with 2500 plates, but a smooth cover like the RB20 and the rest of the stuff looks like Rb20 as well. It also appears to have the two recessed or indented (siamesed?) cylinders on the manifold closest to the firewall.

But I have seen several engines that look the same identified as RB25's, but of course going off internet pictures is retarded. -sigh- Hope that block plate rust comes clean.

Here's another of those "odd" engines identified as an RB25. Notice the manifold, hoses on top of the engine, front cover and plates.

Perhaps it's an RB25DE engine converted to a turbo? The RB25DE engines appear to have a manifold very similiar to the RB20, and with the other strange differences such as the apparent lack of a "raised lump" in the cover...

Bah.. it's just bugging the piss out of me. Heh..

I guess I'm going to try and get the sandpaper on the block and get a read of the stamps on the ID plate, and get some pictures of the transmission if possible tomorrow. (Sunday)

I did find out a couple of interesting things though.. The Series 1 RB25 had the coil pack next to the firewall, but the Series 2 RB25 didn't have anything bolted there. An RB25 head will not fit on an RB20 and vice versa. The RB20E is nothing like the RB20DE(T)..

There are almost NO pictures of RB's with the timing cover off.. lol.

-sigh- I'm going to bed.

The R33 RB25DE STILL has the VVT, I got an RB25DE long block to replace the head on my RB25DET. The R32 RB25DE I believe cam without the VVT. You gotta check the block where I told you, that is the only way to tell for sure. Also if you post the part number for the ECU I will tell you what that ECU goes to.

From what I see, and I am not trying to pick a fight, RB20 all the way.

R33 oil cap? You mean the plug on the valve cover where you pour oil in? It looks exactly the same as mine...

JonPowell, I know that's you're not trying to pick a fight.. I appreciate what you are doing very much.

I just want to make 100% sure there's no way it could be a 25 before the whole thing comes out.. lol..

Yellow4g63, the fuel injectors are one of the first things I'm going to check when I go back.

Dekand, thank you for posting those pictures of the block without timing covers..

The ECU won't do any good to check, since there is no way to make sure it is the original ECU and belongs with this block. If the plates have been changed, who knows what else has? That's also why I don't put much stock in the transmission either for identification purposes. Unless that ID plate cleans up, I think it's going to be very difficult to be sure.

I reconize the fuel pressure regulator, on the picture. the rb20's lay sideway and the rb25's is straight toward the back. and especially the upper coolant port at top, just like my rb20's

sorry to say man, you got ripped

No, I didn't get ripped.

RB25DET on the way.

Makes me wonder how many folks on here might also have "RB25's".

I would agree with everyone else that says looks like you have a rb20.. Maybe an r32 RB25DE that was converted to turbo?! either way i would want the TRUE r33 rb25. Also check to see what transmission you have the rb25 is substantially bigger than the rb20.

Either way I hope you get it worked out.
