Update Navteq?

I have an Infiniti with nav, no DVD player.
And I have a file containing the latest Navteq maps and the Consult III software to apply them.
The car's current maps are located in a 30GB HDD in the AV unit.

The service manual says "Update of map data is performed with the CONSULT-III and the applicable cable."
What cable would that be?

Is there anything else I need?

Looks like it's a CF adapter, see my post below with the link to an install bulletinPDF for Infiniti dealers.

I will not buy an HDD based system next time! Lol

I don't think it's through the CF slot (Not 100%, haven't done it myself, but we do have a tech on staff that said the process takes a good 2-hours) . They have to get to the rear of the unit, hence the labor cost.

One of the negatives with HD NAV...but the performance vs. disk-based is worth it IMO.

I'm pretty certain the update is done through the CF slot. That's one reason the update takes 2 hours. Another reason is the amount of data being transferred. The CONSULT III doesn't look like it includes a CF cable.

I also found online that the drive inside is a 30GB Toshiba auto-grade IDE HDD.
And it's locked.

I'll get to it sooner or later. It's summer, the kids are off and family time is priority right now.

The OS is a unix based OS QNX that is encrypted. I was looking into this awhile back and this forum is a GTR forum but they did a lot in the hard drive stuff on the nissan car.

I found a GTR forum discussing the topic.
There are various ways to unlock the HDD.
In a Mitsubishi forum, they've done it.

Once the HDD is unlocked, it remains unlocked and I can update the maps annually (provided the online community continues to provide Navteq maps).
I can even possibly change software to do some tricks, a step ahead of myself, lol

Since the core info from that link is from 2009, I did some research after the kids went to bed last night.

Turns out I don't have to pay that company $40 to unlock my 30GB drive.
There are basically 3 drives that work well with our N/Infinitis. They are an automotive-rated Toshiba 30GB & 40GB, and a 80GB Seagate (I have all the model numbers and links to what I found on my Macbook... I'm on my PC right now in the kitchen getting ready for work).

From the GTR thread above, KD posted the file structure of the Nav partition. I looked at my unlocked Navteq files, exact same folders, just different .bats, etc inside.
I'm pretty sure I can do the update of files on Windows7, it's really a straight exchange of the folders.
From another auto thread dated this year, someone posted the exact method to crack their Toshiba drive (same model number as ours), he posted the software and all the hardware required.
I have everything except the new drive which I've ordered... the auto-rated Toshiba 40GB, $26 shipped.

I only want to open things up once. So my plan is to take out the AVC, snip the 2 wires, ground the one, ghost the HDD onto the new 40GB HDD, update the maps, then swap it in. If I have any problems, I have the original HDD I've unaltered to put back in there.

Depending on when the new HDD arrives and when I can do this, and I am estimating 90min including computer work for the actual task, I won't be able post any results until then.
Godspeed and $26 to update my maps + get nav/display while on the move, save $500, lol.
($500=Navteq/dealer cost to update maps + KP tech hardware mod).

quite different between consult 3 and consult 3+ in the prices
can consult 3 work on GTR?

The Consult method is just red tape. Using CIII, we need codes, the CF adapter is expensive, and the HDD is still locked after the procedure.

I ordered a $4 IDE to SATA connector off eBay and it should be here soon.
The other day I decided to do the GPS/display bypass to see how hard it was to get to the AV control unit.
I can pretty much get the AVC out in about 5-10 minutes (8 screws, ~15 modules to disconnect).

I cut 2 wires and installed a switch, near where my right knee would be, looks factory. I can now enter a new destination while driving, and my wife can watch a movie on long drives

If the Mitsubishi boys can unlock their HDDs, I'm sure we can.
If needed, I'll borrow a friend's Logic Analyzer to crack it.

If it can't be done, no big deal. I have TomTom GPS on my iPhone, which is pretty accurate, and it mirrors on the display now and through the speakers.
How to: Jailbreak > Cydia > Resupported (to allow 30pin to composite out), and DisplayOut (scales iPhone output to in-dash display)

As I mentioned, the CIII method is not worth it. Link to a kit/cable above.
And you still need a certification number and map key to apply it.

The labor charge at a dealer is the usual fleece, and is part of running a business.
The dealer method is basically run CIII, run map DVD, apply cert key, apply Navteq key, insert CF adapter and wait.
HDD remains locked and the process is repeated every time you want an update = $ to Navteq, $ to dealer.

If we get the unlock key, and it might be universal to the same Toshiba HDD, obtain the Navteq maps online, it's a DIY with a $3 IDE-SATA-USB cable.
Once you get the hang of removing the AVC unit, it takes about 15min at the most.
You could even ghost the HDD to a larger one if you wanted to store a huge music library on it.
And the HDD remains unlocked.

Keep in mind those with nav/DVD in their vehicles just update their maps using the latest Navteq burned onto a DVD.
It's us nav/non-DVD/HDD owners that gotta do this crazy dance.
