Well, I noticed that this forums kinda slow right now and I havent really posted up much on here at all. And I figure nows a good time to start.
Im a mechanical engineering student at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, getting ready to graduate this May, or next December. The building of my car been slow for a number of reasons, but I hope that it will speed up and Ill end up with what I want out of my 240 after i find a real job.
I bought an 89 hatch when i was a freshman at school, The car had been the previous owners resto project. The car had been destroyed by hail, had the motor blown up...etc. It had a ka24de swapped in when i got it with some slightly janky wiring. Here is what it looked like at that time
Image
Image
shortly after that, I picked up some 17X8 final speeds for cheap, and ended up selling them for profit..in hindsight, that was probably a bad move because they did look pretty sweet.
here's what she looked like at this point
Image
Image
the car sat like this for a while, It was my daily driver and it saw a fair amount of track duty and street sliding
Image
I ended up getting rid of my side exit exhaust and throwing in a j30 lsd, and a 1 piece driveshaft somewhere during this time
Image
and made a pretty badass shift knob...

The car stayed like this for a while, I spent a summer in New Hampshire with my family, and spent some time trying to get back into motocross i ended up spending all of my time, money, and effort into motocross, I bought a 250, got my 125 back up to par, and f*** up my back. I ended up herniating a disc and not going to the hospital, i thought it had gotten better until I noticed that the feeling in my leg and foot was compromised, I ended up finding out my spine was twisted and has pinched a nerve and done some other s***...and my sophomre year in school was kicking my a**...so the 240 got neglected, and i had to sell a bike or the 240 to pay for school...so i sold my 250.
pic right before it left
Image
the 240 was in a sad state at this time, It had been in two hit and runs, the heat had destroyed the hack job that was done on the roof and she started running like buttcrack
Image
Image
Image
if anyone has suggestions on fixing my roof let me know.
When my Junior year started I ended up getting a job working at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory working as a student engineer, a job which I still hold today. I also joined the school's Baja SAE team and learned a ton about fabrication, I was busy so I didn't touch the 240 for about 8 months. It was no longer my daily so i only drove it a handful of times, all of those times in anger.
Here are some pics from baja in case yall are interested, and the 240 in anger

Last summer I actually had some money, and time, so I ordered an engine gasket kit, motor mounts, PS rack and went to town. and got her running propper!
sorry...no pics
Then I got hurt again, I was back on the dirtbike trying to train for a desert race, crashed, and hit my head. Concussion. nbd right? wrong. about a week or so after that happened i started getting massive headaches. They are cluster headaches and come in cycles. When they happen, they pretty much render the rest of the day, and the following day useless. I still get them from time to time. This halted the plans i had for the 240 for about a month.

Finally, I got around to doing some body work on it (still havent done the roof), and painting her in my yard. I painted her a nice shade of white. In these pics she isnt cut or buffed...as a matter of fact, i still havent gotten around to doing it.

Last night I noticed my radiator support has been completely separated from the rest of my car...no idea how it happened. But there will probably be some ghetto fabbing present in this thread real soon. or a legitimate tube front end!

LOL, when they called it a "dildo shift knob" they actually meant DILDO shift knob... Pretty bad a** but I already get too much crap for having a regular bubble shift knob...

I liked the matte black but I understand why you painted it white, mine faded real fast sitting their baking in the sun. Lol at the shift knob. First time I have seen that!

haha thanks guys, yeah, the paint faded after a few months, and i finally painted it three years later. I wasnt doing to divulge this....but i actually painted it with a roller :tisk: but i think it came out okay.
Should make some progress on the front end this weekend now that finals are over.

the dink has found a home in many things since its days spent in the 240, including a stint in some chicks s2k, a holloween costume ( d!ck in a box), coworkers desk, wedged in between seats etc...the final resting place is my roommates rock crawler...to which I gorilla glued it on.

Well, Update time. I have yet to formally fix my core support. I welded it together a while back, but I think its time for a tube front still. The damage is worse than I thought. i dont know how this would happen, as i havent crashed it, and the bumper support is fine. Is it possible that bad bushings put force through the tension rod bracket into the radiatior support causing the radiator support to rip away from the frame?

heres what it looked like
drivers side:
Image
Image

Passenger side:
Image
anyway, welded that together in a haphazzard fashion, and bent up an exhaust after work one day
Image
Image
i ended up buying 7 feet of 2.5 inch tube and needing about 9, so its too short lol

did that in preparation for this
Image
Image

ended up doing pretty well and got the 4th best time overall behind victor's Pikes Peak/group N rally car and a couple of wrx's
Image

then on the drive home i heard some noise's.... rod knock bad.
I am currently in the process of pulling the motor and picking up an s14 ka engine swap this weekend. The new Ka is attached to an auto transmission so hopefully it isnt beat to hell.

I also picked up some mystery seats and a grant wheel/hub from an s13 in a junk yard saturday  so stoked on these (keen eyes will notice there is no c***-shifter)

Image

next up after the motor and front end reconstruction is finally suspension...but who knows. I work slow.

The separation of the core support is common on S13s.
It's only held on by a few spot welds I think, so they come apart after a lot of hard driving.

I scrubbed the pictures of the dildo shift knob. Please don't post pictures like that on NICO again.

I did not know that was a common problem, but I did notice when i cut it off that there werent a lot of spot welds down there, and there didnt appear to even be any seam sealant in that area either, which i found strange concidering that it was gobbed in around damn near every other nook and cranny.

also heres a snap of the front end in place.

Image

I still have 2 bolts on the top of each fender holding them on. The bumper is held to the fender by all the bolts, to the new core support in 2 spots by the headlight brackets, and is kept from sagging by the front bar. I think it should be solid, and that I shouldnt have to worry about ill fitting panels too much(not that i care). I can pull both fenders and the bumper off all at 1 unit by only talking out 8 bolts! :bigthumb:

Also, I dont have pics yey, but I mounted the lights by hanging some .5OD X.12 wall tube off of the rad support, drilled them, and welded some weld nuts on where necessary. Everything lines up nice, and now Im finally ready to throw in the new ka

Here are a few pics that I found that i never put up. The first pic shows how much of the front end that I cut off. I chose to cut this off because i felt that the vehicle would be stronger if i made down tubes going from a plated strut tower to a plated frame rail. Some may argue that this makes the car unsafe in the event of a crash because it essentially eliminates the crumple zone of the vehicle. I disagree. The steel of choice for this project is 1018 mild steel. I chose the mild steel so that It could bend in the event of a crash hence lessening the blow that the occupants will feel, this coupled with the fact that the strut towers will still crumple should provide ample safety for the driver.
( I really want to do FEA to prove this in the near future if i have free time, as of now all i have are rough matlab calcs that support it, and dont prove it)
Also bear in mind that this car will more than likely not see street duty much, if at all.
Image

this next picture shows the plate that i made to mount the tube to the tower. pretty basic .125 plate cut to roughly match the shape of the tower and disperse the load over the front of the tower
Image

downtubes and frame cross member roughed in.
Image

and on to the new stuff. I started friday at 3pm with the car looking like this
Image
I started off by spraying the bay white to match the rest of the car
Image
I than thought that it looked too nice for this mutilated zombie car... so i resprayed the bay an easter egg blue that i had laying around the shop,
Image

while the paint was drying over the course of the night I tore the wiring harness, and auto trans off of the s14 ka and went through and replaced all the gaskets on the good motor and did a halfass inspection of the motor, and realized this motor probably had a lot of hard miles due to the amount of burnt oil on crap. but I was pressed for time so I played it off . Heres a pic of the shop somewhere around midnight (7 hours in)

Image

I replaced the clutch and slave cylinder in the car, and swapped the necessary stuff over from the s13 ka to make the s14 one work, threw some new motor mounts on, mounted fuse boxes, wired her back up etc... and 30 hours of straight work later here we are. (9pm saturday)

Image
Image

after that I reassembled the front clip on and she sits in the shop patiently awaiting a battery cable, steering wheel and hub before I spin a wheel in triumph or frustration.

the next big things on the list are wheels (xxr530s 17X9.75), some used coils, and maybe some clean, non hideous, and cheap aero. She will be done after that for a few years

In case you're wondering, i swapped my s13 dizzy, s13 intake horn, and s13 exhaust manifold over to the s14 motor to ensure compatibility. If I need to swap anything else over please let me know, as I havent started the beast up yet to be sure she runs. lol

didnt plan on it. no title, and this pile wont pass any inspection to save its beaten, mangled life.

but for discussion sake (not arguement) ... why is it that I shouldn't drive this thing on the road with the tube work? and how is it different than a truck with a bumper as seen below? do people on here have a problem with those?

there is no way this 240 turdpile poses more of a danger to the public then a truck bumper....

Image

and what about those "stingers"
Image

these things are tied directly to the frame of the rig, and most likely the crumple zones are welded on 3/4 of the trucks rocking these. Thus essentially making them a wrecking ball on public roads, a wrecking ball that has a giant anvil that is at head level to any occupants of a passenger car if one of these trucks was to hit one. How do these things pass safety inspection each year? because they shouldn't.

discuss...
GO!

Maybe they incorporate some kind of crumple zone in the bars?

crumble zone or not if you hit the right spot and it doesnt crumble your screwed it would be pure luck to hit a crumble zone on that thing and not only that but that hummer bumper will rip your head of way b4 you even thought u were going to hit a crumble zone (i hate trucks)
