Still need Ideas:

To recap: 1996 Q 45 received 150k service in July. Fuel Filter changed at that point. In December, check engine lite came on and periodically bucks. Cant predict when but it is now maybe two or three times per day.

Got some good suggestions.

Iso heet - Just put in second bottle Cleaned MAF filter - altho did not look dirty

Still bucks ocasionally.

Qustion: What are the other possibilities? What should I try to elimimate next?.

All of our local gas seem to have up to 10% ethanol. Is that a problem?

Have owned for over 100k miles and so far as I know the FUEL PUMP has not been replaced.

The mechanic who looked at the codes and reported that one possibility was "Camshft positioning sensor" was not an experienced Q 45 mechanic. He suggested replacing that sensor and then "going from there"

Am otherwise very happy with this vehicle, but am struggling to find a way to keep it

Thanks

Yes, why you should use a bottle of ISO-HEET every other tank.

You really need to find a qualified technician and quit dorking around with guessers.

And this would have been fine to append to the original thread to keep it together when you do reach a resolution.

Have you measured fuel pressure? BG44K? Checked all engine control contacts?

I thought ISO-HEET is for 2 cycle engines and Diesel and HEET is for normal cars.

Which ones are you referring to?

Heet is mostly methanol something that should NEVER be used in Q engines as it reacts with aluminum.

Pure Isopropyl [IsoHEET] Alcohol absorbs [mixes with] water from the fuel better than ethanol alone.

The ideal solution is not to buy any water in your fuel in the first place. This can only be accomplished by not buying ethanolized fuel.

Is there a way to dehydrate ethanolized fuel? Benzene? Otherwise, how do you get around federal regulations in states like AZ that require this "special" fuel?

In my case, I changed my fuel filter, did a fuel rail flush and 2 Red Line Fuel Injection system cleaner bottles, a can of BG44K, replaced air filter, cleaned MAF and no check engine light. Still haven't found the problem. I just added a bottle of HEET too.

I wonder if the TPS could be the culprit.

To reemphasize, ISO-HEET only!

It's too late. I already put it in before the earlier posts. I called Gold Eagle and their guys there recommended Heet so that's what I bought. After reading the posts, I called back and their lab tech says that the Heet will not cause damage and the gave me some explanation about a kind of gas taht was used in the upper east coast from like 1996-1999 with methanol, but it's not a concern today. Anyway, like I said earlier, I already used 1 bottle.

Just that methanol will not fix the water problem in ethanol like isopropyl will so it is a waste of money.

No inexpensive way to remove ethanol from gasoline and if you did you would have to add an equivalent amount of toluene or m- xylene [MTBE or ETBE] to get back to necessary octane.

If you had a giant column you could just [chill] and add more COLD distilled water and the ethanol would fall out of suspension with a cloudy layer of mixed product and gasoline floating on the top. {how they do it at tank farms to remove the water [partitiong.dividing] slugs between fuel batches.

Then use calcium chloride to abosrb the remaing water [not done at tank farm].

What are people planning to do about lawn mowers, weed whackers, and boat engines...............home generators.FAA does not allow ethanol in piston airplane engines which will fly above 12,000 feet........a very expensive source.

Posts on ISO-HEET are at lwast three years old on this board.

Reading does help. Never trust retailers. Their job is to sell you something. Anything, if need be.

I don't know why I didn't search it. I was in a rush that day. Lesson learned.
