What colour is the stock driveshaft on a 1989 240sx fastback, and what does it sound like if you knock on it with your knuckles?

Mine is black and makes a dull thud like thick plastic (not metal), but feels kinda hollow. Is this an aftermarket one?

hmm it could possibly be one of the over priced carbon ones floating around. Mine is kinda rust/grease covered and mine also makes a thud I guess you could say, definately doesn't feel hollow though.

Ah crap I hope it's not. That would mean the previous owner has probably raced it. It's definitely not rusty, which kinda suprised me. I expected most things under there to be a bit corroded, but the driveshaft is black, but not greasy or rusty, and there are flanges, universal joints, etc that look like aluminum or possibly a brushed stanless steel or chrome. I was kinda thrown by how clean and non-rusty the drivetrain components were, particularly considering I drive through a muddy industrail site regularly. I'll see if I can get pictures (might be hard without a lift).

Umm.. no. I don't mind having a non-stock one. It just worries me because if the previous owner went to the trouble of putting in a carbon fiber or magnesium/titanium one it probably means they've raced (and abused) the car.

I already found out that most of the visible gaskets are non-stock, which means the engine has been worked on (doing who knows what), and the exhaust has been replaced (but with a cheap one... may have been trying to cover up the ricing to improve resale).

I was also a bit intrigued about the fact that I've never had just one rear wheel spinning either... It might be a coincidence (I rarely spin the wheels anyways), or it could be an LSD.

ummmmhh. there are so many things wrong with that statement. Maybe some honda guy who doesn't know a thing about the vehicle abused the car, but it cannot be true about the person who has upgraded his vehicle with better part.

I push my engine to its limits, but it is always in better shape than my mothers '03 camry. and always will be.

you talk to the person when you buy the car, you can always notice how knowledgable he/she is.

Just so you know.

hmm, when you look down there... is it still a 2-piece driveshaft? (w/ a carrier bearing)

if they're aftermarket carbonfiber/aluminum ones that i've seen, these will be 1 piece...

ricebike....out!
