Underdrive pulleys are smaller diameter, where lightened pulleys are stock diameter but lighter weight. The benefit of lightened over underdrive is that and underdrive pulley will "under-drive" all your accessories. Your alternator, AC compressor, etc. won't turn at normal speed with an underdrive pulley. A lightened pulley won't affect the accessories like that.

You may not have anything to worry about from an underdrive pulley, though. If you have a lot of power-intensive things in the car (ICE, etc.) you probably want to consider the lightened one instead.

You said what the underdrive pulley does (under-drives your accessories) but you didn't say what a lightened pulley does - since its the same diameter of the stock pulley, what are the benefits? In what cases wouldn't you want a smaller diameter?

I've got a decent amp/sub setup that seems to use a lot of power, so would that mean I'd benefit from a lightened pulley rather than an underdrive pulley?

Also, would an underdrive/lightened pulley combined with a new bettery (possibly an Optimum Red Top or comparable) help keep the charging system healthy? (Sometimes the car hesitates to start, as if the alternator isnt working as good as it should)

The lghtened pulley has the same benefits as the underdrive pulley. They both decrease the rotational mass on the crank shaft. Lighter=better.

An underdrive pulley should not have a significant effect on the charging system. I've read about plenty of people using underdrive pulleys on Maximas with big stereos and such without problem.

ZGadson: I would look more at the factory grounds as your potential problem.

Good question! I wouldn't think you would need one though.

well I know that u don't need one for the light wieght pulley but as for the underdrive pulley... Will the tensioner give enough way for the smaller rotational crank? It is after all only a few centimeters difference.

With the under drive pulley, yes. You will need a new alternator belt. The stock power steering belt can be used, you just have to take the slack out of it.

With a lightened pulley, it should be the same circumference; so you would not need a different belt.

UR Unothodox raccing has their SS line (underdrive) and their SSc line (lightened stock diameter).

My source at Infiniti stated that UR was one of the few he trusted. He went with another company that used too soft of aluminum and the pulleys started wearing away against the crank seal eventually leaking.

The UR pulleys on other hand are harder aluminum and should be great. He also said that harmonic dampening wasn't an issue with these pullies due to the well built nature of our Nissan/Infinitis. This is coming from a friend/Infiniti Performance Parts associate with a fully built 350Z putting over 400rwhp. He knows his stuff.

Its kind of pointless. Make sure they are blanced and stuff. Your engine will rev .00001 seconds faster

i don't think they are that useless. I used to have a 94 Ranger, 3.0 liter and 31.5" wheels and after I installed an underdrive pulley i was able to use 5th gear again...

U put 31s on a ranger? Maybe tires. 30 inch rims are like 10 grand made outta garbage metal =D I had a jeep 4 liter and when I put 31s on it that bastard couldn't get out of the mud worth a dam

.00001 seconds faster huh?

The weight saving is approximately 4 lbs on the G35, haven't gotten exact numbers on the Maxs yet. That's half the weight of the pulleys.

You'll use less gas and be able to accelerate (a little) faster.

Get your elementary physics down before you come making ".00001 seconds" comments

The UR pulley I had on my 95 made a great difference in mid-range acceleration. I think I had to change one belt, .5" shorter to make it work. The only bad thing is that I do not think UR is producing these anymore. I may be wrong though, just been hard to find as of late.
