I was never actually in the NRRBA, but my S2 RB25 hasn't been running for about 1.652 years now, So the last few months I've been busy tearing down, diagnosing, reading posts, SEARCHING previous posts etc.... I noticed the engine was missing, so i checked timing. coilpacks, injectors, wiring, etc, and...compression... #1 cyl. was down to 106psi. I thought it might be the head gasket so i ripped the head off only to find no evidence of head gasket failure. After tearing the engine apart, this is what i found...
Sticky rings....BAAAD!
Fortunately, there was no damage to the cylinder walls, and the carbon buildup was pretty soft and easy to clean... so , not wanting to dump any MORE money into it, i spent about 10 hours cleaning and scrubbing...
While the engine was out i took the opportunity to scrub the engine bay and clean up the wiring a little...
And, Yes... that is a Greddy knockoff intake, a rough casting from hell... but with a little (lot) of work with an aluminum burr bit carefully port matching, they can be made worthy IMO.
My guess is that the engine was running extremely rich... I'll be the first to admit that I was an idiot for throwing on the Nismo FPR WITHOUT adjusting it, then running 13psi WITHOUT so much as an A/F ratio gauge But live and learn, And if your me, learn the hard way
Oh yeah, i didn't mention the compression test was done w/ throttle shut.. didn't know any better at the time... Compression is back now, just fired her up yesterday, and she purrs like a kitten. Just waiting now for the salt to clear off the roads.
Any ideas on what else it could've been? I was running AMSOIL XL-7500 10w30, so I pretty much ruled that out.
