I have a 2011 M37 and I was wondering if there was an option where the door would unlock just by pulling the door handle on the inside while the engine was still running. As of now while the engine is running the only way to unlock the car is manually toggling the lock between lock and unlock or pressing the power unlock button on the drivers side. Thanks

It seems like most new cars are set up this way. I doubt there is any way to change this since it is a mechanical function, not a digital or electric one.

I was just discussing this a few days ago with a friend of mine who has a Maxima. Not sure what year, but this is an annoyance for me too! He had someone hook it up to a computer and they changed something in the computer for the doors to not lock when the car goes into drive. So, he rolls around with doors unlocked. It's a safety feature that you have to live without if you go that route, but that's the only fix I know of.

I like the idea that all doors lock automatically after the car starts moving. The only down side is that upon returning home, the doors remain locked until the engine is switched off. Frequently passengers reach for the door handle before I hit the stop button and the doors won't open. Another safety feature if you're hauling rug rats, but slightly annoying to adults.

There's several programming choices that can be changed, such as doors locking when placed in drive, doors locked at 20mph, doors unlocked when the car is placed in park, etc.

Door lock function is electronically controlled by the BCM.

Any way those options are available to us without the dealership? I am mostly interested in doors unlocking when put in park. Like mentioned earlier, passengers often reach the door handle before I turn off the ignition.

It probably has to be done via the CONSULT device.

Yup, consult is the only way. At least that I know of.

By pulling on the handle from inside?

This isn't about unlocking the door from the outside or via the button on the inside...I do that all the time (I'll pre-heat my car and lock it so people can't get in unless they wanna smash the window).

Correct, but opening the door is a mechanical function (pull handle). When locked the handle's connection to the door release is disengaged. This is why the handle feels like is connected to nothing when it is pulled while locked. The OP's question sounded to me like he wanted the handle to unlock the door which it cannot do, the car (BCM) has to as you said. But I may have misinterpreted what he typed. :slap:

I just picked up a 2013 M37x and this is killing me. My wife's QX60 (and previous JX35) has a setting in the menu that lets you choose to unlock in Park or ignition off so I'm not sure why that wasn't included on the M. I'm not familiar with the Consult. Is this something the dealer would be able to do? Or any mechanic with that device?

The Cosult-III is the Nissan/Infiniti factory diagnostic scan tool. Every Nissan and Infiniti dealer service center should have one. A very small number of indepenant shops may have one too. Anyone that has one should be able to change thses settings for you.

So I got my hands on a Consult-III today and made the change. It probobly took about 5 minutes. Afterwards I tested it out; started the car, shifted to Drive, locked the doors, then shifted back into Park, and the doors unlocked as expected. :dblthumb:
