hi all,

been using unleaded gas on the SR20 for the longest time. someone told me it would be better to use premium gas to prolong the engine's life.

any truth to this? what's in premium gas that would benefit the SR20?

thanks

All the gas you get at a gas station 87-93 octane is unleaded...

i dont know too much about fuels. or octane ratings, sooo im not gunna act like i know what im talkin about, but i do know that in jdm land, they use like 105 or something high a$$ octane like that, and these engine i imagine were made to run on that, soo i imagine using the highest octane, 93 unless ur like in florida, and at some places they sell race fuel like 100 and 105 at the pump, but i imagine this would be best for your engine,

someone who actually knwos what there talking bout will come and explain it all, but this si all i know

Japanese gasoline has higher octane ratings than the US, but how they calculate the octane numbers is different so the big differences in octane between the two countries are not as big as everyone thinks they are.

The highest they sell at local japanese pumps is 100 octane. Whether they calculate octane numbers differently or not, not really sure. All i know is there is a FREAKIN HUGE difference in performance when going from 92 (on-base pump) to 100 (off-base). Huge difference in price too.....i paid a lot for only 30liters of gas.

Id run at least 91 octane on any boosted vehicle.

My roomates grand father worked on developing Techron for Chevron so there are differences in quality and detergents, for me personallyI, have had smoother running, better mpg, cleaner internals on engines by using the Supreme/premium from Chevron, QT, Shell, Mobil. Watch out for cheap gas like AMPM out here, it F'ed my friends engine up.

Basically, any boosted engine should have premium.

it's funny when people defend lower octane gas...

one of my friends with a stock sr 240sx was adamant that running on 87 was fine and that it saved him a ton of money...

ironically he traded his car for a stock ae86 corolla.

shows how smart he is.

I'll never understand why people think saving $2 to $3 on a full tank justifies the use of 87-octane in their SR...

High Octane Fuel =-Less Chance of Pre-Denation, i know i cant spell.-Run Hotter, alittle-Runs Cleaners and burns up cleaner. Cleans the system out better-Some say they get more power out of it cause it runs cleaner and more efficent-Some say it last longer cause its runs cleaner and more efficient

High octane gasoline does not outperform regular octane gasoline in preventing engine deposits from forming, in removing them, or in cleaning the engine.

And wouldn't higher octane gas run cooler (i.e. less chance of pre-detonation)?

Not trying to be a d!ck, just trying to get the facts straight.

Higher octane gas does not burn cooler.

The higher the octane the longer the gas takes to BURN. The longer it takes to burn, the less chance you have at detonating. This in turn, makes it so you can run higher boost. Too much oxygen causes knocking with crappy fuel, so if you run a turbo motor GET GOOD FUEL 91+ octane! or race gas!

Why do speedy cars run alcohol? Because alcohol burns hella slow so you can push ALOT of boost into a tiny motor.

Yes, for our cars, premium is GOOD!

Oh and just to clear something up about engines, its combustion that forces a piston down.

Combustion is not an explosion, you do not want something to explode. That causes cracked internals.

i drive a camry daily and i always put 93 octane because i get more hp out of it and i get better gas mileage, about 3 more mpg compare to regular gas.
