Alright, here's the deal.. About.. give or take 5 days ago, I started hearing this tapping coming from my car, I believe it to be coming from somewhere near the head.. but when I come to a stop, it slows.. and when I accelerate, it repeats quicker.. I've heard it could be valve tapping due to bad seals, but I don't know. Any help or opinions on this matter would be appreciated greatly.

Fuel injectors can make a tapping, but its a more high pitched one. Put your ear next to each on and see if you can isolate it, or where the sound comes from. The head is pretty general.

more than likely it is from your valves due to the increase and decrease of taping during acceleration.

I have a 1990 240 and mine does that whenever the oil gets lowish (about midway between the high and low marks). I heard that problem is common among the ka24e

highly recommend a seafoam treatment. got rid of the tapping in my old 143k sohc just by spraying it into the throttle body. i say try a 1/2 can as an oil wash before you change it.

could it be the timing chain? My friends '89 240 has the same problem except that the sound will go away for a week or so then come back. Any ideas?

Aye could quite possibly be the timing chain or any of the other problems listed in the above post. The chain could possibly be rubbing against the upper chain guide (very common for that guide to become loose) or could be new chain and tesioners are needed. Just my input and best of luck in the crusade

its either the timing chain or on of your lifters is collapsed. You can pinpoint it by holding a screw driver to the valve cover and putting your ear against the end of the screw driver. Move it around until you isolate the tapping.

is it actually a tapping? mine sounds more like a clicking that gets faster with revs, i always thought it was probably the mechanical fan, but now im worried it might be one of the listed problems, are there any real negatives since i drove it with the noise for like 2 months, or will i have have to do something about it when i pull it from storage after winter?

hi,Did you find the problem? I've just posted the same thing, and I have been told by a general mechanic that the chain need to be replaced ($1100)!!!!. But I spoke on the phone to a Nissan mechanic who says it's unlikely though not impossible. either way do get it checked out as I am having a real heart attack at facing this latest cost!Good luck - let me know if you find anything out.I have a 240 sx 96

Mine did the same thing once. I pulled over, shut off the engine and checked the oil. It was low on oil and luckly I always carry motor oil in my trunk. After 1 quart, the sound stopped.

Try that and see what happens.
