have any of you guys gotten a universal muffler and had a muffler shop install it with piping? is there much difference from the whole thing made by the company? is there any problems with doing it this way? the only thing i would think is that the new piping might be kinda crappy and rust or whatever, and the fitting wouldnt be like oem. but its really cheap this way...i could get a 5 or $600 exhaust's muffler for like $2-250 then pay them $100 to install and put new piping. i dont know, what do you guys think.

Since I rally my 240SX on gravel roads, I have replaced the stock exhaust with a 3" straight pipe to an Ultraflow muffler at the back. This set up is cheaper to replace as sometimes the pipes/muffler get "bashed".

This meant taking out the cat and middle muffler. Depending where you live this could be illegal, especially if you have annual DOT inspections. The sound is great, and your neighbours won't really notice you getting home (unless you really want them to).

I didn't really have to do anything to the O2 sensor as the exhaust flow seems to be ok with the ECU.

Muffler shops for the most part don't focus on eliminating bends, or reducing the angle of those bends they have to install. Plus a ready made system is something you can just have show up to your door, and you'll know it will fit and work properly. Mandrel bent 3" piping also isn't exactly stocked at most muffler shops either.

Although I plan to build my own 3" race exhaust consisting of a dumped unmuffled 3" pipe.

I have a magnaflow muffler and a Meineke bent cat-back piping (2.25). The whole setup including muffler cost me around 300 dollars.

You are right on the rust... The piping is all rusted now and it is not mandrel bent.. It did free up some horsepower at high RPM

You'll have no idea how it sounds until you have it made.

Personally I think that you would be MUCH better off buying either a new or used name brand stainless exhaust. If you get some crap job done by a local yokel, you will most likely end up with an exhaust that sounds like carp and will rust straight through (how fast depends on your location) Unless you go with a custom setup made out of stainless components produced by a shop that knows WTF they are doing, you are not going to be happy with it.

just look in the classifieds and be patient

I think its a great deal if you have access to some equipment. You could buy your own aluminized or stainless 3" mandrel bends and have them welded together. You would have to test fit every step of the way, not to mention finding a way to hang it.If you can get good prices on the bends and welding, I think its a steal.

But like gogg, you dont know how its gonna turn out until youre done.

my friend went there for his exhaust and its been almost two years...i check out his to see if its rusted up. if you were to paint the metal would it prevent or slow the rusting?

4 a 100 dollars more u could get a nice exhaust from megan racing, i myself would trust a company that builds performance exhausts 4 a living because monroe may be cheaper but u will never know the sound until its finished like they said. performance exhaust companys have dyno numbers and they tune there products 4 sound so u have somewhat of an idea of what u r gonna get. IMO the apexi N1 is awesome

custom exhaust is cool, but if i had money i would get a nice one. ps i had the megan racing sr downpipe and resonated catback on my s14 with a ka, the resonator scraped all over my driveshaft and the muffler was sunken on my rear bumper. it worked for an exhaust, and it was cheap, but that kind of fitment crap is just annoying. also on a custom exhaust they can get it higher up in the car so you dont have to worry about scraping it on stuff.

BRM all the way. get the dual tip as that seems to be scarce in the exhaust world as far as s13's are concerned
