After searching and studying for awhile, I decided to register and ask my particular starting problem question. I've got an A/T s13. When when turning the key in the ignition, sometimes, esp when hot, the starter doesn't even turn over! Often when this happens, I wait until the interiors stop dinging at me, and it's ready to start! Other times, like today, the car would start for nothing. But let it sit twenty minutes, it starts!

I've got codes (according to the FAQ here, I question whether the 95-98 codes apply to my computer) for the knock sensor and primary ignition signal.

My main suspicions are the starter solenoid or the park/neutral switch. Point blank, sometimes the ignition signal never makes it to the starter. Any opinions and/or tests available for the ill-equipped?

I only post b/c I've already searched! Thnx!

You are describing the typical symptoms for a bad starter.Try hitting the starter with a wrench or hammer next time it doesn't start. It should then start if the starter is the problem.(hitting it is the best way to diagnose the situation)

ALso check to see if the solenoid on the starter is clicking. If it is, you know the starter is getting power. ANother indication of a bad starter. Starter and solenoid are one unit.

If it is not the starter and the solenoid is clicking, it is likely a weak battery. Tighten cables and clean posts.

Like he said--definitely in the strarting circuit. also look at the starter wire if is all green and nasty consider replacing it. You can have 12v at the starter and not be getting enought amps to properly turn the motor over(as you described).

Thanx for the replies! I'm ready to start inspecting the wiring, so I decided to try to find an online diagram for the wiring on the ka24de (yeah). Any other resources for the USDM service manual online other than the zeroyon resource? Saving the zip isn't working for me.

Yup, when the car decides not to start, the starter does not click. We're esp. inspecting the neutral safety switch. Wiring diagrams, plz!#@%#$%#

Had the same issue on my S13 five speed. Starter died, had to roll the car & pop the clutch to start it. I replaced the starter....problem is gone completely.
