I just finished assembling a Y33 4.63 VLSD HD, Differential that I got on Yahoo auction. The dealer said it was rare, but I thought he was just trying to bump the price. I lowballed, since nobody was bidding, and won it. 340 bucks, shipped to my door. I figured I'd just rebuild it and use it. Pretty standard stuff...right?

I tore it apart....only to find that the side seals, bearings and input seal are not the standard 240SX set. OK, can't be that different (My stupid inner-voice says).

The pinion seal is a G_D Unicorn. Found only in Japan...and it's pricey (50-60 bucks). The Axle seals....took two days and three AI's (GROK, Copilot and Gemini) all working together (pasting each AI's answers and logic into the other AI input box) to help track them down. My lord....what a rabbit hole!!! It was like herding cats. AI's will never take over if they can't even figure out Nissan JDM parts :rotfl

The bearings, I thought Id try checking the "Intar-webs".....yeah...wrong answer. Several people who "knew it all" sent me down a rabbit hole. Two hours later, I ended up trudging out to the garage to read the numbers from the bearings. Should have just done that from the start and saved the brain cells I suppose. The bearings ended up being about same price as the 240SX bearings. FCO bearings had dozens in stock.

In the end, a successful rebuild, and happy with the results. Problem solved.

Anyways, is there a Unicorn parts thread to post the hard to find stuff to save people time? If so, I'll list out the part numbers, sources, and any tidbits to help the next guy.

Hey m0lacha! I'm not certain we have such a thread, but I like the idea of starting one!

Hell, I can convert it to a standalone article for more exposure.

Reading the part #s is the trick - I learned that the hard way!

(I've been doing this for 20 years and never knew the Y33 diff was 4.63! Good intel! )

Further, the Y33 Cima had (some) models that came with the HD version. I got mine for under 325 USD (with shipping) from Yahoo Auctions (Japan). Most people don't know what it is, so the bids were low. All the bearings and seals were cheap, and only one seal is rare (but still available in japan...sometimes in the US). Many of the HD units are VLSD (Limited Slip)

Benefits?

The HD version is much stronger than the S‑chassis R200 Differential. Because of this you get a Higher torque rating. The best part is that it bolts into many Nissan subframes with minor changes, (front bushings and rear cover swap). Mine even came with 2 x 3 axle-stubs to bolt into my 1993 Convertible.

In this case, mine is a 4.63? why? Well...if you have an automatic, this unit give you +10 PERCENT torque (at the wheels). Think about that. Not Horsepower, but actual torque at ALL RPM's.

I did some added digging, and found that other models also have the R200 HD versions. You sometimes have to ask the Japanese seller to help id them

traits For the HD:

-Larger pinion shaft
-Larger pinion bearings
-Larger carrier bearings
-Thicker ring gear flange
-Stronger case casting
-VLSD drum (in many, but not all)
-Heavier snout

Some are "ABS" snout and some are not.

Not a lot of documentation for them, and ALL, not just some...of your AI assistants are dead wrong about them (I found that out doing research).
