Unexpected radio behavior

I'm driving a newly-acquired 2012 Rogue SV. The car is new to me but has been "in the family" since the original purchase. 48K miles, and in good condition. This Rogue was driven by a little old lady. (Really!)

A discovery: when the transmission is in Reverse the radio cannot be turned on or off. As soon as the gear selector is moved to a different position the radio resumes normal behavior.

I think this is probably WAD (Working As Designed), but why?

It's probably software, a lot of them are designed to drop everything when the Backup Cam is active and only go back to normal behavior when it's in another gear. Even if it doesn't have a cam, there might be code in it that still goes active in R.
