After driving around today, I laid my Taylor digital thermometer on top of the battery {outside temp was 91F} and closed the hood. Using the max temp hold feature, Peak temp. read 181.1F ! The temp had "cooled" to 140F after 2 hours.

No wonder injectors,knock sensors, hoses,batteries, etc have a short life in the q!

Well the coolant [and engine] operates at 174-212F is winter-summer so I would expect the underhood to be HOTTER than 181F.

By the way Battery electrolyte boils at 235F, but the water starts evaporating at 190F.............why you need to check levels in summer.

Measure the heads around the exhaust ports and you will see 300F.

Ambient 100F, out of evap ~ 140F, air out of Rad ~~ 170F

Amazing CONE [non oem or real CAI] people don't realize that 181+ F is bad...............they lose 5% minimum until the underhood air cools down.

Do you think that some venting similar to the washer mods on 240sx's would help lower underhood temperatures? Or perhaps ceramic coated hedders?

Hood vents like the old 240/260/280z would help

As much as we all want to avoid it, probably the best mod to lower the temp would be a hood scoop. If done tastefully it could look very nice.

The reason the 90-93 Q's have so many brittle under plenum hoses is the lack of a front grill. Air flow is limited. The 94-96 doesn't have the brittle hose problem although above the plenum the plastic electrical connectors get brittle and crack in all G50's.

Again, in the 13 years I have owned my 92 Q, during the a/c season, I always tried to open the hood whenever I pulled into the garage (or, whenever I would stop at a rest stop). My under plenum things are all still OEM, and, I have never detected any leaks, or odors under there. Now, everything may explode the next time I drive it, but, I have used the same process on my other two high end vehicles (high end due to parts cost and labour availability), the Lexus LX and Infiniti M30. Seems to work for me...so far!

p.s. I have all the rubber from Joe for the Q, just in case!

The Q produces an amazing amount of heat. It literally melts your eyebrows off if you open the hood after driving. Maybe speed holes in the hood would alleviate some of the heat.

I've seen the 240 washer mod to raise the back of the hood. Does that really work, or is it just for wannabe dorifto idiots?

Jeepers have high temp problems and the solution seems to be installing vents. It would look terrible on the Q however. I like the idea of poping the hood everytime you get home.

Need to rig up a blower motor with ducting up to the plenum area....like the 280zx used to come with from the factory......wonder if there are any in the junkyard? The blower would automatically run for 15-30 minutes upon engine shutdown controlled by an thermostatic switch/relay system {would probobly double injector, knock sensor, hose life}

Now that might be the first worthwhile mod to the Q in a long time.
