That's a pretty broad question.
There are all kinds of undercoating and rustproofing solutions out there.
There's the permanent, one time application stuff that dealerships try to sell you,
and then there's the stuff that should be applied yearly, or at least every second year.
The permanent stuff I'm not a big fan of.
It works well for a while, but even with the promises that it will never dry out, etc., it can develop cracks, and water ends up getting trapped in behind it, and you end up with a worse problem than if you had never treated the car in the first place.
Personally, I've oil sprayed my vehicles for almost 25 years, and have had great success with every car I've done.
My best example would be a 1988 Grand Voyager minivan I bought new, and drove for 12 years and 400,000 kms. I treated it every second year, and had no rust, save for a few small patches around the top of the rear window (where it was not treated).
My 2002 Pathfinder was inspected last month for the strut tower recall, and there was zero rust under there. The tech said it was because of the oil spraying treatment.
The undercarriage of my truck is rust free (still black). It works for me.
P.S. I live in Canada, in a snow belt where they use road salt all winter.
Hope this helps. :wavey:

Sweet info Buzzman. Is there a brand name for the oil spray treatment you are using? I've never considered it, but testimonials like this can sway me in a flash.

Rust Check and Krown are the 2 i know of. I just had my QX4 done at Rust Check.

There is an independent guy here in Ottawa that I usually go to. He's not part of a chain, like Krown or Zeibart. He runs his own shop. I've gone to Metropolitan Rustproofing as well. I don't know how big their chain is though.
One other note about oil spraying treatments: I've found over the years that not only does it slow down the rust, but it helps keep all the mechanics in better shape too. For example, my door locks and windows never freeze in the winter, and most of the undercarriage stuff stays in better shape, and when I have to do any work under there, it's much easier removing bolts that haven't rusted. Stuff just seems to last longer, and... I don't have any squeaks or clunks. The only downside, if you could call it that, is that it's a little messy under the hood, and you do get dirty working in the engine bay. Small price to pay.
If I get a chance, I'll take a picture of the underside of my rig, as well as the engine bay, and you'll see what I mean.
Cheers.

Unfortunately. I live in the states. PA. I did some heavy googling this morning and found it pretty difficult to find either rust check or krown in my area. They seem to be the best to do the job based on user comments all over the web. My '03 is in great shape underneath(except for the fuel filter mount) and i wanna keep it that way.

If i can find a distributor down here, i'll post it up for anyone who is interested.

1997 QX4 at 4 years of age after warranty Krown rust proofed about every other year. Upon my inspections a decision is made every year whether to undercoat it that year or not.

At 4 years old the undercoating migrated and pushed moisture out and left a patina of rust everywhere which over time left and the under parts of the vehicle became clean and black. Subsequent applications undergo the same affect. Now at 14-15 years of use the bottom is rust free.

Krown is not an oil but a chemical composition to do what it does, get into all things including electrics. It is also a dielectric and keeps the wiring in shape.

The Nissan Q is a rust bucket if not kept under coated, the recall is proof.

A good undercoating every year or 2 slows the rusting, quiets the vehicle, lubes the suspension, saves the wires and connections it touches, lube the electric antenna, keep CV boots supple keeps the body squeaks down, lubricates windows and door, but not the hinges. And stops the crankcase and gas tank from rusting out.

If you have ever replaced these tanks the Krown process is worth the price and the price never goes up as long as you own the car. They even give me a seniors discount and I do not own or work for Krown but they are 1 of the very few companies that do a good job.
