Greetings!

New to this board, and new (used) owner of 2001 Qx4. I have noticed quite a deal of rust underneath the qx4, expecially on the axel and all the bolts the running board , shocks etc are attached too.

has anyone noticed this as well, is it a danger, or is this pretty typical?

thanks in advance!

Its pretty typical of cars driven where salt is used to clear the road ways during snow season. The eastern united states uses this method and the cars get to lookin pretty bad when the salt and moisture combine.

Due to how heavy it is there is probably not much you can do short of replacing all the parts. I would say spray it with undercoating but that wont do much for stopping it from growing. Its like a cancer.

The only way to get rid of rust is to remove it completely. If you really want to remove the rust bad enough it would probably take you a couple of days of work. I would say to buy navel jelly, gob it onto the rust, let it sit for an hour or so, and then take an angle grinder with a wire brush wheel to it. Once you do that you have to clean it up with sandpaper or some kind of abrasive cloth/wheel. Once it is completely clean of the rust you are going to want to replace the bolts and stuff like that. After that, the only thing to do after that is apply some kind of corrosion preventing compound. Good Luck
