I am fairly new to the Q45 scene. Just bought a 1996 with 108k on it 2 owner and in very good shape. I have been slowly getting the engine maintenance back in order. AC is fixed, door panels recovered, external trans filter and flush, diff fluid, oil change. The next things I want to tackle is the knock sensors and under plenum set. The MIL is not on but my scanner shows a code for 1 bad ks. From reading and searching posts it seems Joe at Scottsdale is the guy to get parts from. I have been to the internet site but have been unable to locate any of these kits for the under plenum job. I have a couple questions is Joe still there? how do I get the NICO discount? how can I locate the "ultimate kit"

There are a couple of posts listing the ultimate kit for the earlier VH45DE. One by Wes has the spreadsheet in xls.

Joe is the Internet parts manager at IoS and is very difficult to contact as he is extremely busy running that and the Nissan side also.

Search for it and (it could well be in General Chat as several years ago all the posts on that Forum was thrown in there). You might also find that spreadsheet at Q45.org.

Write down the numbers and call IoS with your VIN to get the parts you need.

also be very sure to check the continuity between the harness plug (somewhere on the passenger side under the manifold, one of the 3 big harness blocks) and the ks itself.

I did the whole under plenum thing and replaced the KS to find out that the harness was faulty, and I just spliced in the old KS with a separate wire and dumped it somewhere else on the bank where the OS was supposed to sit (outside the plenum) and called it a day.... Might try to go back to fix it properly next time the plenum comes out.

If the scanner says you have a 0325 you are running at like 30% of the engine's capability at best.... :naughty: Get that fixed and enjoy some tire smoking V8 torqueyness :yesnod

There's no "NICO discount" - they just sell to the public for the same price as they sell shop to shop.

Be sure to get a full quote for all of the hoses that an under plenum refresh will cost before you dive in. You might get sticker shock.

Last summer I snapped this picture of a 96 Q45 that had just arrived in a junk yard. It was funny story as I had looked at the car about 9 month earlier and found it needed a new KS. Anyway the seller disconnected the check engine light and some guy bought the car. I guess he came up with this approach to hook up a KS to remedy the KS code. I can't believe the exposed wires in the picture. However, there might be a workaround solution somewhere in this to provide temporary KS functionality while you collect the hoses and parts required for a full under plenum refresh.

Thanks for all the good replies, I have seen on other cars workarounds for the kc problem by relocating them, as far as I can recall they worked very well. It may be something I explore.

There is no way the KC can work in any other location. The torque specification is crucial to the coupling of the piezoelectric crystal to the harmonics in that location.

It is amazing that so many board members think they are better engineers than the ones who work for Nissan.

Some pictures from my under plenum job are listed below.

The Plenum underside. I found it easier to setup the Plenum as an assembly that you can drop into place

Pressure test any lines (coolant and fuel) that can leak before re-installing the Plenum.

There is a trick to installing the hoses in the picture. Does the 96 model use a gasket or RTV for the coolant pipe connections?

Image

Pre-measure the hose clearance then leave the hose clamps loose during fitting on a gasket or RTV. You can see how I did it in the following picture.
