After adjusting my timing, I noticed that my underhood temps skyrocketed. It's to the point where my hotpipe is heat soaked as well as my intercooler. I am currently running no heat shield on the turbo, manifold and an unwrapped downpipe. I've been reading up on wrapping all these and turbo blankets. I was wondering if anyone has any experiences with these methods of heat reduction and what kind of results I should expect besides the obvious.

Is your timing too retarded?

I always ran heat shields on the manifold, turbo and dp elbow to keep temps down. On my new setup I ceramic coated everything inside and out and run a turbo blanket.

Are you calling him a ruh-tard, Darius? j/k.

GSD, your timing is too far retarded, advance it some. Where did you set it? What are your EGTs?

I've been hearing that a lot lately! About my timing, but I set it according to the FSM. States that it should be on the fourth tick (15 degrees). And that's where I have it set. I did it with the throttle position sensor disconnected, all air/power off, and steering wheel in a neutral position.

And I don't know EGTs because I haven't purchased my gauges yet. But under the hood could cook your face. I plan on wrapping the stock mani, dp, and getting a turbo blanket. And I also plan on cutting up my hood and venting it via...Image

Also, I've been having some other concerns as well. I set my idle originally to around 800rpm and everything was fine but would hear a ticking. As the RPMs dipped (setting the timing according to fsm (15 degrees @ 650rpms), ticking got worse and idle was really rough. If I set my idle to 750, the car is fine but the ticking still remains. I have no clue what it is and worried that it is a lifter or worse.

I also have an EWG set up dumping to the atmosphere......

not sure what's normal, but just so you have some reference. all my timing is set correctly. my idle egt's are around 3-400 celcius. stock turbo and mani for now and my under hood temps are high as a kite. i've just come to the conclusion that it's just a hot motor and living in FL doesn't help. on the hottest days so far though my engine temps have never gone above 91-92 celcius and that was after sitting at idle for while. usually rides in the high 70's low 80's on 110 heat index days.

i really think venting the back of my hood will make a HUGE difference. i just haven't brought myself to do it yet.

Yeah the more I've been reading about the RB engines, the more I am starting to believe that it is just a hot motor. I'm definitely wrapping as much as possible and venting the hood. I may get E-fans just to help pull more cooler air through and help with the underhood temps. I advanced my timing by 2-3 degrees. I'll keep ya guys posted on what happens.

Yea rb's put off way more heat than ka's or sr's after putting my hood spacers on from pbm sitting at red lights I could see the heat rising from under my hood. Engine never makes it over 175*f Hood spacers help a bunch for city driving. I can get pics if you want.

Sure I would love to see pics of your set up. My engine doesn't over heat but I am just looking to lower underhood temps drastically because it is heatsoaking EVERYTHING. I'm going to try all the stuff I stated before and the hood scoops. If all that doesn't help, I will change out to the Carbon Creations M1 hood...

I have a vented hood on my S14. Great for letting the hot air out.

Bad part is OMG my engine bay gets dirty really fast!. My car stays at my friends shop in the desert and the engine bay looks like it.
