At first, I felt bad. But after talking with my mom, it seems all good. To make a LONG story short, my grandparents adopted me as a baby, and they are both deceased. Well, my mom paid all my college up until last year when she wigged on me and she cut me off. Seeing that both people on my birth certificate are deceased, I am legally an orphan. Great. So I file for financial aid last year. Each semester last year I got $4k back (in loans, grants paid my school). In the fall I hotted up my computer, bought clothes and bought my S13. The spring brought suspension, brakes, wheels, tires and a CA18DET. THis summer, I ahve 2 jobs and will get the CA in with boltons. I just got my financial award letter for next year: $10,000 for the year! That means $5k each semester. Well, my mom is very proud of how hard I have worked since she cut me off, and she is now paying for my school again. She told me that I should use the $10k to hop up my car even more. Since this is what I want to do for a living, she thinks it is a blessing that I am "funded" to do it, and that I should go for it! I am sooooo stoked because on top of the $14k I am getting in total (only $4k needs to go to school, so that is where the grants will go) I also manage a coffee shop which puts about $1k in my pocket each month. Stay tuned: Rico's car is gonna be NUTS.

Well the grants pay for my school, mom and loan pay for my car. So I guess I should be saying, thanks to Uncle Sam for paying for my college.

That's a down payment on a starter home, and you're gonna dump it into a car?

Yeah, put some of that money towards a home. That's the best investment you can make.

I'm going to college on loans, and each year they hassle me over paperwork--they lose something, they find a 'discrepancy' so they can try to cancel my financial aid. My mother pays for nothing, she can't afford to. But just because I live with her, they only loan me $1800-$2500 per semester when full-time semesters cost close to $4k for me (hence i don't go to school full-time)

Your'e lucky to get what your'e getting because the government isn't as generous to financially-challenged students as they were when my mother was going to college. Hell, my first year of college, they gave me a grant. Not anymore.

Yeah, i'm whining, but this is from 3yrs of being hassled at this school, so i'm tired. I've decided to transfer to a school i can more easily afford, and still get decent education out of.

Best of luck man, at least your'e getting aid.

I am lucky in the sense that I get money, but look what had to happen for me to get it. I had to lose the people that raised me. But my biological mom is cool, and wants me to be happy. She has a lot saved up, and I have a sneaking suspicion that she might give me some money to pay back my loans. It jsut pisses me off when people talk crap to me about wearing Gap and Abercrombie and driving a hotted import. I work and LOT of hours and have a LOT of debt hanging over my head.

On a side note: I went to the local Honda dealer today. I almost thought about forgetting taking my car to the next level and getting a CBR 600RR. But I need that like I need another hole in my head.

I've been told many times over that the debt that I'll be in for my college loans will be worth it for the education I'm getting. Even though the current university I'm attending hasn't taught me much more than what I learned in highschool, they're right. You don't come across as being thankful and grateful for the opportunities given to you when you come onto a forum to point out how 'uncle sam supes up my car.'

I'd invest some of that left over money into a spider account, or a down payment for an apartment/townhouse, or just stash it in some account that i can't touch. You never know what may happen. I'd be lying if i said i wouldn't take some of the money to fix it up my car, but at this point, it would be to keep it reliable. A car's just a car anyway.

Your'e lucky though, so don't mess up! :)

put it into a high yielding account that way when your 27-30 you have a nice chunk of change to buy a home.

maybe invest it from now till then, you could make it work for you and retire wealthy.hell if i had 10k given to me i would have blown it too. when your your age all you see is the present . you dont see the oppurtunitys that needs 10- 20K when your a few years older wanting to become a business owner or investor. buy some realestate propertys and get some steady monthly income.

yeah, invest that ****. you're car wont get you much back after its done, and if you hve a family, a hotrod wont be the best family car. do small stuff, just to tide you over, but save that other incase something happens.

Shshshshs everybody. Let him do what he wants, some of us might get lucky in a year or so and buy his car from him for 1/2 of what he spent. :)

Rico, car is a pretty poor investment unless you live in Cali commute 100miles/day and buying a Prius.

yeah bro, i dont think you need to brag about it if you're gonna talk about "what you went through to get it" i've had tons of close people in my life leave this earth for various reasons and i got nothing but a big hole where they used to be...and? i feel kinda like you're tkaing that money for granted...you dont deserve that...you're cheating the system...so your caregivers are deceased...your mother is still there and apparently taking care of you...that's wrong bro

Rico, its really not my place to judge, so I won't. Its your money, do what YOU want with it, but posting this all over a public forum won't come without its consequences. I suggest you do what one of the older, most experienced members of Nico suggested and invest in a house. Seriously.
