I just cant ****ing do it. The upper cover came off without any problems but this lower cover does not want to come off. I removed all screws/nuts, double checked and still nothing. The top half is almost completely off but the lower end of it doesnt budge in the slightest.

What the hell am I doing wrong?

Hate to break this to you but: The oil pump is integral to the front cover but the oil pump suction pipe is bolted to the crankshaft main bearing girdle. You have to drop the oil pan and remove the bolt holding the suction pipe before you can remove the front cover. You really should have some sort of manual before you start this kind of stuff. The factory service manual is available in PDF format on the web, hard copies are available on Ebay and Haynes manuals are available at the local parts house. It really does make things easier...,

Hope you have fun with that, it's a pain in the a$$ to remove the oil pan off a 240.

You'll either have to unhook tons of crap and unbolt the motor mounts to jack the engine up (from the bellhousing) to get enough room to remove the oilpan, or you'll have to jack the whole car up and try to coerce the oilpan out the bottom.

Both of my 240's are leaking around the oil pan and I'm really debating about going thru the process of taking the oil pans again to reseal them. It really was a pain last time I change the timing chains on both of them. Plus the automatic ones have a few more hoses that need to be disconnected in order to clear the area around the oil pan.

Just a bit curious - what are you doing? Chains and guides, or what?

really hope he is doing something worth the trouble, because removing the chain guide (which is not really a solution to any problem anyways) only necessitates removing the valve cover...

Hy mofo,

If you are not replacing your timing chains/sprockets - don't worry about it. You do not need to pull the lower cover just for a head gasket. You may want to set the engine at TDC, compression stroke to make your life easier.

If you are already in and close to chain time, well... you know what you should do.

djsilver is dead on about the pick-up tube. That sucks #$%!
