I had my swap done, running, and drivable on Wednesday night. I took it for a run up my shops driveway only to discover that the 2nd gear syncro was totally shot, couldn't get it into second 80% of the time with the clutch fully depressed. I remembered reading that the KA and SR transmissions are the same, but with different bellhousing and that switching bellhousings was easy.

So yesterday I decide to put in the good transmission from my old KA. I'm not using a lift, just have the car as high as my jackstands will go, about 2 feet or so roughly, and the trans was a mother to get out, it just didn't want to slide out good and took ALOT of wiggling. I switched bellhousings which was very easy, changed over the needed sensors and such, and decided to let it sit for the night.

Tonight I spent close to 4 hours fighting to get the trans to go back into place. Getting the shaft to even begin to enter the hole was a *****, and now I'm sitting about 1-2' from the bellhousing touching the block, and it won't go any further. I'm sure the shaft is in centered since i can spin the transmission arond on it and all the bolt holes seem to line up. It feels like I'm catching the first step in the shaft on the clutch, but no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to go in. I tried jacking it up, lowering it down, wiggling it from left to right and up and down then in circular motions and it just refused to go. Me and my boss finally gave up after hours of getting nowhere.

Can anyone offer some advice or is there something I'm not thinking about doing? Was my information wrong about the trannys being the same aside from the bellhousings?

:help :help :help

put the transmission in gear and try again. the input shaft is not engaging the cutch properly.

with the transmission in gear, when you rotate the transmission, the shaft wont rotate as easily and you should be able to get the input shaft to slide into the cutch disk.

also, if you unbolt the driveshaft from the output yoke, put the transmission in gear and move output yoke to move the input shaft so it engages the clutch when your trying to put it all back together.

The trans is in gear, but it doesn't feel as if the splines are even trying to engage. I've got about 8" of driveshaft that came with the swap thats been cut with a torch, thats what I'm using to try to turn the output shaft. I'm telling you, I tried everything I could think of right down to rotating the transmission itself 90 degrees in each direction. It feels like it is hungup on the section of the shaft where it flares out.

I battled with my transmission install all day, I finally gave up and pulled the motor back out and put it on outside the car. I couldnt even get the input shaft into the center, close as I ever got was just past the cluch springs, I had no room the transmission was hitting the tunnel and wouldnt move up any more.

yeah. that sucks when something simple gets out of hand.

what your going to have to do is tilt the front of the motor up with a piece of wood and a jack. what your trying to do is get the rear of the motor to angle downward, this gives you more room to work with.

when you say it feels like its hanging up on the portion of the shaft where it flare, do you mean the throwout bearing on the transmission input shaft?
