I got my redtop installed and running in my datsun 510 in early february. I am using an AEM EMS and was building the tune from scratch. As i got it tuned, it never really made any good power, even at 12psi boost. I checked EVERYTHING! for almost 3 months. It was low on vacuum at idle, it got horrible gas mileage, it was running alittle too hot, the idle was never rock solid. I rechecked everything. After hounding all my super-auto techno savy friends, i still had these problems. So i eventually blamed it on the EMS, seemed like an easy scapegoat. This last weekend, I decided to check the cams. So i opened up my friends SR and took some pics of his cams at TDC, then I went home and took off my valve cover. I put my engine at TDC compression, and something wasnt right. Yep, you guessed er, when I rebuilt the motor, I put the cams in wrong. They were both 2 treeth advanced from the crank. So I popped off the intake cam gear and loosened the chain and made my cams look like my friends cams. I put it all back together, sync'ed the timing and fired it up. It started right up after a bit, but was lean, so I fattened up the map and took her for a spin.Man I love the SR engine!! this thing rips the tires through first, second and pulls hard in 3rd. It is amazing how much better it runs with the cams in right. This project has been in the works for a very long time and it is a good feeling to FINALLY feel some payoff. I am amazed how much torque this thing has at the low rpms and the S15 T28 spools up instantly. I am running 12psi, but will up it to 15 soon, assuming the stock S13 injectors can keep up, which they might (if I turn up the fuel pressure too).Lesson: just because you followed the factory service manual, that doesnt mean that your cams are in right!
