i have a 2000 xterra XE 50k miles. im thinking about off roading with it just for fun, but i don't know any areas in CA where they have legal off roading events. anyone know?

I know nothing about my suv...can anyone with a similar suv inform me about upgrades or anything? like...good tires to use for off roading, suspension upgrades, things i can do to gain more power...stuff like that. also, links to upgrade parts.

also, whenever i drive the car, there is always this squeaking sound coming from the front right brakes (sounds like it is coming from there). when i apply the brakes, the sound goes away until i let go of the brakes. i was thinking maybe the brake pads or something, but i want to confirm the problem before i go out and start buying anything.

welcome to our little club gunclap!

I will see i I can't get one of our dealer reps to address your mod questions.

About your brakes. When brake pads wear down they hit , what is caleed the "wear marks" which results in a really loud squeal when eevr the brake is actuated with any amount of force.

A slight squeak on the otehr hand may indicate simple glazing. How loud is it?And how old are your brake pads?

well it isn't that loud, but i can hear it when the windows are down and it is very annoying. i don't think it's the brake pads anymore because the sound occurs only when i'm not pressing the brakes. the xterra is exactly 50k miles. have never changed brake pads before.

You have many options for mods. Before I go into the list, you’ll need to understand a few things.

The only ways, right now, to lift the Xterra is a torsion bar lift or a body lift. While the body lift is much cheaper, the suspension lift is much more functional for off road use. I’ve see 2” and 3” body lift kits. The suspension lifts usually are about 2 ½”-3”. If you go with a suspension lift, you will be changing the steering geometry creating an upward push from the tie-rods to the center link. Eventually the bushings on the center link will wear out and you’ll be replacing center links left and right at $160 + labor a pop. Your best would be to upgrade the steering as well.

Calmini makes both steering and suspension upgrades. I would give them a call.

You can fit 31x10.5x15 or 265\75R16 tires with a small amount of trimming to the mud flaps. You don’t really want to go on dirt, rocks, or mud with the stock tires unless you have a way to get yourself unstuck. The BF Goodrich AT\KO’s are a popular upgrade. You can usually get a good deal on them at any BJ’s\Cosco. Tires are the biggest mod you can do for your truck because that’s where the traction is.

As far as the actual off roading, join a local club and go on official club runs. That is the smartest and safest way to learn how to off road responsibly. There are a few clubs in the area. One is Northern California Club Xterra (NCCX)

I hope you find this helpful...
