My advice is before spending any more than 30$ on fixing a overheating problem to always to a hydro carbon test kit. Call Napa. Not the other places Napa or they will say "Huh?"
It is a simple chemical test that determines if you have hydrocarbons (byproducts of combustion) in your cooling system. The "I bled it, and it made it better but now its back." Leads me to believe that it would be a good investment for you. It will tell you if you have a busted headgasket, or other internal engine damage.
Consquences of not doing this. You get car sorta fixed, and then blow off a hose, or crack radiator, or totally destroy the engine from steam pocket overheating in isolated areas.
If I have a vehicle that is overheating in my shop, I always test it. You would be very very very surprised at the number of times I hear, "I have had this car in X number of shops for this same problem." Lots of people have the idea of doing the easy stuff, without eliminating the other things first.
Now most often, it passes the hydrocarbon test and we move on to the thermostat, bleed, fans, waterpump problems, but its a whole lot easier to sell a head gasket before you tell them a thermostat will fix it, then have it come back on a tow hook. Then who is liable? The other way, my a** is covered and my customer at least knows the root cause. Hope it helps. Steve
