So I tried a search and didn't really find the answer i was looking for.

1. Can anyone confirm that the ECU is located in the center console, and if so what is the easiest way of accessing it location?

2. Is there an easier way of retrieving the codes besides from the ECU? One person was saying something about jumping 2 of the pins on the data link connector. If this is true what pins are they (a pic would be very helpful)?

Thanks for checking out my thread. Dan.

Hey so it turns out i have a 95 OBD II Altima

advanced auto parts cleared my codes the other day. turn out one was a knock sensor, which i believe was triggered by the alternator that seized up and broke my belt (hoping i could get a couple more miles out of it). the other one was an 02 sensor, but the not so intelligent parts guy didnt look to see if was upstream or downstream sensor. i guess I will wait and see if the light comes back on.

BTW does anyone how if the CEL is triggered by a drive cycle or is it by the number of starts? I am a little new to nissan so i dont know what they normal use.

huh. my '95 U13 is definitely OBD-I. my (former) 95 max was OBD-II.

was easiest for me to get to ecu by removing the kick plate right by accelerator pedal. much easier to get to the 'screw' to retrieve codes than either of my Q45s.

did you ever get this figured out? see an old post from me in NOM (Jan 2005) on tips for changing the exhaust manifold O2 on the U13.

oh, few more things: KS don't normally trigger the MIL (at least i've never seen it on a nissan), but there will be a stored code 34 (OBD-I). I changed the KS on the U13 at 150k (had intake off so was free labor), and it still ohmed in spec. it did have a crack in it so it was close to the end.they eventually fail from repeated heating/cooling cycles doubt that it had anything to do with your alternator- exacerbated if you ever have an overheat (they melt at about 300F).

well my MIL hasn't turned back on but i dont think it is going to either. the theory i have come up with is that the knocking from my alternator bearing seizing up caused the knock sensor to be tripped. and after the alternator went out i had to drive just on battery power for a couple miles so the low voltage from the battery in turn made the o2 sensor send a low voltage singal. so everything has worked out ok.
