Depending on what amp (size), how hard (4, 2, 1 or 1/2 load) and the quality you can get away with a simple out of the way placement. I even had a small Punch 75 or 45 (old school) running a sub as well as the mids/tweets (mixed mono I think they called it) under my passenger seat. Never tried to have a block party and it never went into overheat protection, but as everyone will say that's not the best place.
Point being, find somewhere out of the way and away from the sub box. Amps have overheat protection, but nothing to keep the sub from vibrating the solder joints loose.
