Just purcahsed an 07 Altima Hybrid. Very confused as to type of motor oil to use. Different dealer service departments use differnt oils. Some use synthetic. Some non-synthetic. Prices for oilchange alone run from $30 to $75. I am afraid of: (1) ruining engine (2) voiding warantee Car resides in Northern California. Nissan main office customer service says not to use synthetic oils. Dealer where we bought it uses nothing but synthetic oil. We purchased maintenance plan through them.

Appreciate some advice. Novice at this stuff.

It is still an internal combustion engine and I don't think using regular vs. synthetic will void a warranty. (How would they know the difference really?) It is all a matter of the level of care you want to put into the car while you own it. If you don't mind spending $35 alone for oil and a filter for synthetic but want the better lubrication, use it. If you aren't as picky and don't want to spend the money, run regular oil.

For example, I religiously change the oil in my civic every 3000 miles and use regular oil. On the RB motor that I just rebuilt, I broke it in with regular and have now switched to synthetic.

Its up to you.

Thank you for your reply. What componds the issue is that the owner's manuel says that regular oil should used and yet the tNissan tech put out a technical blurb saying only use synthetic oil.

The dealer probably put synthetic in it for quality purposes and if you want to use synthetic in the future, it is best to use it from the get-go. Changing from regular to synthetic poses problems down the road after the engine has been run on regular for a long time. You make the call on this one. The most important factor is frequency of oil changes, not the type of oil.
