My girlfriend and I just purchased a used 2006 350Z. We're both new in the Nissan world so please be patient with our basic questions.

This car was originally a dealer buy back. The original owner had oil consumption problems with the old motor. The dealer paperwork we received says this car has the "long block" installed and therefore no more oil consumption problems which is covered under our warranty.

Our question is which motor is installed in our car? Is it the DE or the HR? and what does the term "long block" refer to when in reference to the two engines?

If it was replaced under warranty you most likely have version 2 of the VQ35DE RevUp engine.

If you're still wondering take a look at the block and/or location of the dipstick, if there's a "notch" in the block and the dipstick is in front of the block you somehow have an HR engine, congratulations! But if there's no notch and the dipstick is on the driver's side of the block you have a DE like everyone else that got one replaced under warranty.

Ok not sure about what "notch" you're referring to but the dip stick and dip stick tube is on the left (driver's side) of the engine so it looks like I have the DE. Thanks so much guys!

Btw, the dip stick seems really difficult to get in and out of the tube while trying to get a proper reading. It seems I get residual oil as I pull the dip stick out and can't get a "clean" reading.

See the notch in the front where the dipstick and radiator cap are? This is an HR engine.

Yeah, it can be a bit of a pain to check the oil at first, but you'll get used to it. Wait about 10 minutes after you shut the car off before you check the oil as there will still be oil in the dipstick channel for a while.

Oh yeah, welcome to NICO!

We definitely have the engine with the dip stick on the side. Is this the 286hp or 306hp engine? Which year did the engines get bossted with a little more power?

If we're talking 350Z's, then the 2009 has the 306HP VQ35HR motor and was only made in vert models. The 370Z has the VQ37HR with 330HP and 350HP for the Nismo.

the term "long block" means a block with crankshaft, and pistons and heads installed. a "short block" is minus the heads. neither come with accessories, alternator, power steering pumps..etc, these are usually taken off your old motor and put on the new engine.
