I see a lot of you guys referring to your engine type by its code, like Y##. How can I tell which engine I have?

Thanks!

They "Y" codes you see in the posts (like Y34) are not engine designations but body style designations. Engine Codes are VQ35DE (6 cylinder) and VK45DE (8 cylinder)

That's not referring to the engine type. The Y** is referring to the chassis generation.

Yeah, like he said!

The 06' & up are considered the Y50 chassis. 04' and earlier are the Y34 chassis.

Thanks guys! That was way helpful. My warranty has 7k left on it and I'm starting to plan my engines mods, I'm pretty sure that this info might be needed to make sure that certain mods are compatible.

Good luck finding any engine mods that are worth while......................... There are none currently.......Sorry to burst your bubble. Better sell it and get a different car if you wanted to mod it to be faster. Not going to happen unless you have an unlimited bank account.

Without having custom components built for the M (like a super charger or turbo) there is really very little out there as M4T5 has indicated. About the only performance mod that consistenly produces a few HP gain is swapping out the existing exhaust for a "near cat-back" like those made by Stillen or others. Intake mods such as cold-air intake and airbox mods seem to have the opposite effect and reduce power unless you find someone who is experienced with reprogramming our ECM. Sorry.... but if you are really looking to create a high perfomance beast, the M is not a good choice. Something like a late model Impalla SS would be a much better choice.

Then maybe its a good idea to extend my warranty instead. Although, the only other warranty that I extended wasn't really worth it. I didn't start having problems until a month after the extension expired. It was on a GM vehicle a few years back. It left a bad taste in my mouth about extended warranties, and GM. I'm still considering it with my M only because certain repairs might be really costly and could justify the expense of the extension.

If you have the Tech package, the Advanced Tech Package or the Premium Package on your car I would recommend the Infiniti Elite Extended Warranty that will give you 7 years/100K miles. Your powertrain is already 7/100K. I suggest this because all those electronic goodies that Infiniti has cost an arm and a leg to repair out of warranty. A major repair on something like the NAV system, the LDW or the ICC could easily come close to what you would have paid for the warranty.

Agreed. The extended warranty (Elite) would be a good choice to consider.Keeping a vehicle past the extended warranty coverage is really a chance an owner solely takes on his or her own. You really shouldn't be upset with a manufacturer just because problems began occurring after any factory or extended warranty coverages are up. The amount of coverage on warranty a manufacturer gives on their vehicles should tell you what to expect. The manufacturer obviously didn't expect it to stay reliable past that point of coverage. Therefore, you shouldn't either. The experience you had with whatever GM vehicle you had could have happened with any other auto manufacturer as well. Keep that in mind.I've had bad experiences with them too, but that doesn't make me believe that all of GM products are sub par. They still offer very nice cars (Cadillac) and soon the Camaro. Even the Pontiac G8 GT looks like a very nice car for the money. They also produce very nice trucks and SUV's. They come with many options these days. The only car that Chevy has which has came a long way that they produce is the Malibu. Too bad they don't offer it with better engine options. They really need to update their other car lines to be more competitive with the foreign makers. Maybe they will soon. If they do not, they will have a hard time surviving in todays tough market.Anyways, get you a Mustang and mod your heart away! There are more aftermarket parts out there for them that you will be too indecisive on what to choose or go broke in the process! Good Luck!
