I am installed an Alpine UTE-52BT soon in my 94tt w/ bose.

On the wiring diagram here for the OE harness: http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/wiring ... m-z32.html it lists two illumination control wires. Red/Blue and Red/Yellow.

The wiring on the UTE-52BT only has one illumination control wire: http://support.alpine-usa.com/products/ ... 3BT_EN.pdf (page 49) Orange wire.

Anyone know which of these two illumination control wires do what?

I wonder if there are two illumination control wires for the Z's *like mine* that have both the bose tape deck and the sony CD player? I know they're linked together but I wouldn't imagine the illumination circuit for the sony cd player running through the tape deck itself...???

Please use an adapter harness. They're ten bucks, and keeps you from butchering your stock harness. I could seriously throat punch whomever hacked the s*** out of my harness.
But for the record, there's two due to the double single DIN setup where it's two single DIN devices.

Yep got my harness and all. had to repair a hack job on a friends Honda ...goddamn nightmare.

So its safe to use either illumination wire for one din, sweet.

I believe the primary is the red and yellow one. IIRC, when I was doing mine, one illumination operated a bit differently.

Got my metra harness in today. The orange wire on the metra harness matches up to pin number 2 on the OEM harness, the red/blue stripe illumination control.

The metra harness dimmer wire, orange/white stripe matches up to pin 7 red/yellow stripe on the OEM harness. Since all the other wires on the metra harness match up to the correct pin out on the OEM harness I am inclined to believe that the 2nd red/yellow stripe illumination control wire is the dimmer. However I don't recall the dimmer switch on the control pod left of steering wheel having any affect on the tape deck or sony cd player illumination, or maybe I wasn't paying attention.

Either way this alpine head unit doesn't support the dimmer function so ill terminate the wire coming off the metra harness for the dimmer function and see if my deck dims properly when I turn on the headlights using the red/blue stripe illumination.

Huh. Good info. I've actually never dug into it, as I've always used the adapter harnesses. Good to know.

Got it all wired up. Pin 2 on the factory harness (red/blue stripe) is indeed the illumination control wire, the one that dims the HU when your headlights turn on.

Pin 7 is the dimmer control wire.
