You can use it as a dvd screen when the car is not in motion and the ebrake is set.

You can get backup camera hooked up to it. I personally not a big fan of it. I like to feel my car but that's just me.

I'd be very intereted in finding a fix or work-around to bypass the e-brake/park thing to watch videos.

anyone?

Sorry its a little small, but it's the only picture I have on hand that shows the camera. The camera is in the center of the trunks chrome lip, right above the Infiniti symbol. The button to the right is the trunk release.

I'm a little confused by your first question...has anyone done what? Not gone with the nav and backup camera? Lots have, I think...I wouldn't have gotten it and I don't have it on my coupe. Or have gone aftermarket to get the same stuff? Not so much, tends to run about the same price.

Normally, the rear view camera is part of the navigation package. Adding one to a car that doesn't have navigation is much more complicated than buying a camera from the parts department and plugging it into a blanked off hole in the trunk lid. For one thing, I doubt that Infiniti bothers to run wires to that location unless the navigation package has been ordered. Also, the computer program that controls the screen would have to be modified to recognize when you shift into reverse and switch to the camera view. The least expensive way to get the rear view camera is to buy a car with the navigation package even if you have no use for the navigation part. If it's too late for that, your only practical alternative is to trade for a car that does have it.

I felt the same as you about the navigation package. I have a laptop with a GPS receiver and map software from DeLorme. When the map database gets too old, I can buy the latest version for $40. However, the rear view camera is so neat that I wanted it badly enough to pay for the navigation I don't really need. The opposite was true for the adaptive headlights that are part of the technology package. I don't think they are all that valuable and I detest nanny crap like adaptive cruise control. Therefore, I passed on the technology package.

I have to disagree with you. The tech package for me here is 3000+ and seriously I can wire up everything like stock for 500. How? Ok, here are some options:

Get an after market camera and mount it in the hole where the stock camera is supposed to be, I have not looked at one w/o the camera to see how it is different etc or what parts are available.. I will call in a bit and post back... but either way, use stock location or find another, link the power to the camera to the reverse lights, so they power on when the lights do, or if you need more power just use the reverse lights as a trigger and power the camera from elsewhere, but I think it should be sufficient.

So that done your camera turns on whenever your reverse lights do which is whenever you put the car into reverse. Now next step, you router the wires under the carpet along the doors maybe and to your dash (small issue if you are patient and somewhat savy) and you hook it up to your aux or whatever.. there are many solutions for that.. small issue.. theres already stock RCAs for the AUX in the centre arm rest, so to hook up a camera to AUX would be the easiest, but I am sure there could be another way... so if you do that whenever you reverse, just press aux.. and you would have the cam display up... TADA... end of story......

the only diff with the stock cam is that it uses some software to guide you... which I think is un-neccessary so if I can get the physical camera as a replacement part, I am pretty sure it could be rigged up to AUX sooooo easy.... not kidding you.. question now is.. hows the back like for those w/o the nav/camera and the cost of parts.

The camera is $378 from infiniti, I think this is very doable.... the trunk trim panel w/camera, they list 2 types with and w/o so I assume this is the shiny part.....on te lid.. is $160.

So thats $538, I think thats very worth while endeavour, now, only question is.. can I do this myself or do I need people.. If I need someone I probably looking at 1 or 2 hours labour at a good shop.

if anyone has nothing better to do, LOL go look and see if you can find out how that shiny trunk trim is attached to the trunk. I will look at the posted factory manuals, but I do not think they list 07 sedans... but if it does it should tell us how it is removed..

I have a Taurus invisible parking sensor which uses electromagnetic field instead of infrared and the downside is rain and snow causes false beeps.. but key point here I already have it and am taking off my trade, works very well and it is installed on the underside of the bumper. so no drilling or anything, Just put this flimpsy metallic tape along the inside of the bumper..and connect it to the actualy unit via a extension wire.. wire that to the reverse lights tada... i did it myself on my MAZDA3, and I would most definitely do it on the G35 when I get it prob Monday and use that for the moment and later on in conjunction with the came when I put it in next year.

why not just go ghetto and buy a different, non-stealership camera you can mount wherever you want...then just do the body work and/or seal it in.

Run wires to the front...bla bla.

p.s. i dont think a couple people read too well in this thread.

stock clean looking is always better, a good back up camera cost about as much as the one from infiniti anyways, you are just paying extra for the trunk trim piece.. peanuts for a good stock look.. no ghettoing needed.

and for the 07 and 08 regardless of if you have nav or no.. there is a screen there....which is GREAT !!!!

*add*

after numerous attempts i managed to download a copy of the manual stickied and the trunk trim is basically screwed on so it should be pretty straight forward to remove. And the bumper is so coming off the first day to install my parking sensors.

What you propose to do is engineer your own system which interfaces with the rest of the car at the AUX socket. That's feasible (for those who know how) and completely different from trying to duplicate the factory system. One thing I have noticed with mine is the great amount of distortion which is entirely understandable when you consider the camera's wide field of view. Good luck.

you mean your stock factory installed cam doesnt have a good view and is producing a distorted image?

well what I am saying is that it can interface easily not neccessarily AT the socket but because it has one means it has the wires neccessary to do so and I would pretty easy to install it stealth somewhere.
