when you hit the auto button you can then adjust the target temperature

a recharge will help only is thats the problem, and if you need a recharge then there is likley a reason, be it a leak or some other faulty issue, if the car hasn't already been converted now would be a good time to convert to R134A, it's a good idea to replace the reciever/drier when you do the conversion

had a problem (when i first bought my car) where i couldnt figure out how to turn on my a\c. assumed the clutch either went bad or the wiring to the clutch. never tried using auto to run a\c but the recirc and econ modes wouldnt turn it on. eventually i hit auto, and my a\c magically started to work.
since then, i asked around and others get a\c when they hit econ, or recirc, so i'm not sure if i have a wiring demon or something is different on my car.
if you just bought the car, play with it a bit, and make sure the tempreture setting is at it's min tempreture (and outside air is warm) otherwise you probably wont get the compressor to run.
could just be another bug.

Don't know if this will help you since I've got a 90', but with mine you hit the A/C button and then I have the manual temp gauge on the side.... I have to very slightly pull the temp. control slider switch TOWARDS ME every now and then to get the a/c to run cold. it's like the switch loses connection every now and then. If you have the auto controller than I just wasted a paragraph.... oh well.

If you hit recirc it won't turn the A/c on, its not designed to. You hit auto then recirc and things will work accordingly. Aslo Econ will turn the compressor off.
