A couple of weeks ago I was cruising on the highway at about 60-65 mph. I accidentally bumped the O/D button on the shifter with my leg (I have a CVT transmission). The engine revved up to about 4500-5000 rpms for about 3 seconds until I figured out what the hell had happened. After I had reengaged the O/D, I noticed the smell of burnt rubber coming from the vents. This smell lasted for about 15 mins and then disappeared. I have not smelled anything or noticed any sort of decrease in performance or functionality. I checked the manual and didn't find anything about turning off the o/d at high speeds being detrimental to the well-being of the vehicle, but i'm wondering if the aforementioned event can damage your CVT. I can't imagine a shift like that is good for it.

Anyway, I averaged about 33 mpg on the tank I put in after this event, so I don't think anything bad happened, but I just want to know if I unduly stressed the CVT's belt system and should mention that to my dealer next time i'm in for service?

Thanks

p.s. yes, i'm an uncoordinated idiot.

I don't think anything is wrong with ur transmission, if you really want to you can go get it checked out by your dealer. When you hit the O/D button it poped you into well the equilvant (w/e) of putting you into a lower gear. There really shouldent be a problem with your transmission.

Depending on how new or how often you use your V. It may have been the cat. even though cats smell like rotten eggs when put through alot of stress it's the only explination I can think of. As far as damage goes to your CVT. It is fairly new technology and all things of that nature can't really be that tough. I would be more careful because Versas or any car for that matter aren't designed to go 60-65 at 5k. I would have them take a look at it at your next service to make sure nothing is out of wack.
