Turn signals grounded through Hazard / Defroster? 96' 240sx

Someone broke into my 1996 240sx se and smashed up my dash . They tore off the trim ring that held the defroster and hazard buttons, and yanked on the thing until it ripped the guts of both buttons out of the trim ring. Fortunately the wiring harness itself seems undamaged.

I noticed when driving it the next day with the dash all jacked up that the turn signals did not work. Is this due to the fact that the turn signals are grounded through the hazards? I am sure that I will find out when i get a new trim piece and buttons if this is the case. If anyone is a wizard with wiring, and knows this for sure please let me know.
