I just purchased a replacement turn signal switch for my '99 QX4. Is this something I should attempt to install myself (fairly handy but by no means an automotive wizard), or bring it somewhere to have installed. I wasn't sure if there were potential issues with triggering the airbag or messing up other electrical components that I should be worried about. Any advice or step by step instruction would be greatly appreciated.

There are I think four screws on the bottom of the steering column cover. Remove them, and the top cover should remove without much fuss. The turn signal switch is held on by one Phillips head screw, and of course its wiring harness. Remove & replace the switch, reassemble the column cover, done. It's very easy. Here is a very lousy photo that shows the stalk's wiring and its screw:

If I may ask, why are you replacing the turn signal stalk?

Thanks for the info. I was able to take the old one and replace it with the new one...however it did not solve my problem. I have been trying to troubleshoot why my turn signals are not working. When I try to use my signals, there is no clicking noise, no left or right green arrow on my dash, and neither the front nor back nor left nor right signals flash outside the car. My hazards work though (both on the dash and outside the car). I already replaced the combination flasher unit under the dash, checked the fuses that the service manual recommends, and now even replaced the turn signal switch. Any thoughts on what it could be???

Try replacing the hazard switch anyway. Any R50 hazard switch will work, it just might not fit your stereo cluster trim, so maybe try getting one from a junkyard just to see if it'll fix the problem.

When I installed the new turn signal switch, I noticed there were four areas that could be plugged in, however I only disconnected (from the old one) and re-connected (to the new one) only three wiring harnesses. Should there be a fourth wiring harness to plug in?

Also just tried the junkyard for the R50 switch, but no luck. I also called a couple of part stores and they said they didn't have any hazard switches for the QX4. What other vehicles does the R50 go on (if any)?

Thanks

The turn signal stalk only has three wiring harnesses. I'm not sure whether other Nissan/Infiniti vehicles' defroster switches would work.
