the system holds about a gallon IIRC, but the resovoir only holds about a pint (1/4 qt)

Best thing to do is drive the car daily and change the fluid every day (after the final drive) for a couple weeks, or until you exchange a gallon of fluid or so...

I went to autozone and picked up a gallon of cheap ATF and kept going until the fluid was completely changed. AS it turned out my plan didnt work, as I had to have my system professionally flushed due to getting air in the system, and now my PS pump has permanent damage (it squeals when its really cold outside)...

Nowhere near a gallon!Volume depends on whether you have HICAS or not. Without HICAS, 40oz; with HICAS, 76oz.2 pints in a quart. Wes, I'm not eating your cookies.

gallon... quart, its all the same, right... I meant to say quart, but its midnight here in Indy.....

:D

I must not have been eating my cookies, but what I meant was right, but what I said was wrong... I meant to say that you need to run through about a gallon to get it all changed......

The system holds 1.25 qts (just looked in the FSM).....

Sorry for the confusion

Quite frankly, the best way to exchange PS fluid is the same as exchanging transmission fluid; via a mechanical pump.

Doing this way (fluid extraction and replenshment) will require a gallon to do it completely. Look for a garage that features SnapOn equiipment as Sun makes such a machine. If your fluid is not rosy (brown or worse), then a flush through the hoses will be required, and thus be a tad more expensive. Like a transmission, the damge has been done at this point, so you are in a damage limiting mode.

Preventative maintenance is the best kind.
