I am seriously thinking about turbo charging my ka, and i am going to be getting a turbo from the scrap yard, but i was wondering how can you tell if a turbo has an internal or external wastegate? To my knowledge, internal wastegate is much easier then external, right?thanks

Most turbos from the factory have an internal wastegate so you'll rarely see turbos that don't have em' at the scap yard. To identify, there is an actuator with an arm attached to it that opens a valve on the turbine housing. Look below and the actuator is the thing with the nipple on it.

So how does the wastegate control boost? or is that the purpose of it?

It opens a path and lets the air that would be spooling the turbo around the turbine, so it doesn't spin any faster. The wastegate detects a pressure and opens when it detects it. To raise boost you intercept that pressure signal and make the wastegate think there is less pressure than there is, so it opens at a higher boost, even though it was only doing what it was built to do and opening at it's given pressure. You follow?

INGENIOUS!
