I've pulled the compressor and turbine housings off my old T25 but I can't seem to figure out how to crack open the center housing. I've tried removing that star nut thing on the compressor side wheel but no luck. Has anyone done this? I already have a replacement turbo; I just want to examine the bearings inside to see their condition.

That's good info on what to do once I've dissasembled the center housing, but I can't get the housing apart in the first place.

what are you trying to acomplish by pulling apart the center section? i would advise you to just buy a new center section from garrett, because the compressor wheels spin upwards of 100,000 rpm and they are balanced, when you reassemble it, chances are it wont be balanced and will prolly tear the bearings apart.

What I'm trying to accomplish is to verify that the piece of metal that I found in my oil pan is indeed a part of the turbo's thrust bearing. It looks like a portion of one and it fits down the oil drain tube, but I'd rather not fire up the motor without some verification.

ok, well i would still recommend just buying a whole new center section, esspecially if you suspect pieces of the bearing are breaking off and falling into the engine pan. to remove the wheels you need a vise, clamp the center section into the vise and you need to loosen the 12pt nut that is on the top of the compressor wheel, and the shaft should slide out, if you dont have the right tools, i would recommend taking it to a shop that does turbo rebuilds and they can probably tear it apart for you, i could help you if you were closer, but being on the other side of the country makes that dificult.

Hey red,

I wouldn't worry about trying to snatch apart the T25 to verify this! I do know a piece like the one you showed us can not possibly come from the internals of this motor, so please trust me on this one. I sold you the motor and I will guarantee the motor is not the culprit. The turbo is one that I can't be so sure about because turbos are under extreme operating duties and could crap at any given time. There's usually no warranty when you start cracking the motor open, but I can only assure you that your concerns are valid yet too concerned with the wrong thing. If you value my credibility, do as I ask. You are chasing a ghost that you'll never find. Freakish as it is, it is not any part from the physical CA18DET. I just did a head, headgasket, rod bolts, timing belt, rod bearings, etc and it only confirms what I already knew that there is nothing remotely similar able to come off the bottom or top end of this motor. So put on your new turbo and call it a day.

Hey boost, Ok, I'll put it to rest. It wasn't concern over the motor at this point so much as curiousity. Being curious is apparently quite excessive in this instance though so I'll move on. Thank you for your assurances; I know I'll be pleased when I finally hear my little redhead start up.
