I was preparing and examining my s14 SR this weekend and noticed the shaft on the turbo has a little bit of play in it. It was pretty slight and movement was mostly lateral but also a tiny bit longitudinal. I asked a Supra guy who happened to be at my lift space to feel it and he said "not terrible but not fantastic" Did anyone else's turbo have a bit of play when you received it? Should I worry about this? Does this sound like I might blow the turbo soon on raised boost?

I think I am going to ask Neishlin for a new turbo... but yeah, turbo upgrade would be even better.

A little bit of side to side isn't terrible, but up and down is bad.

Good. I called Neishlin today, and they said they would warranty the turbo for 3.000 miles after start up on stock boost. That's pretty cool I guess, not that I'm going to be runing stock boost for THAT long :rolleyes :D

Ok sorry for bringing back an old post but im not sure i got this right. Ok im face to face with the wheel on the turbine side. It has a lil bit of side to side action and very very small amount of up and down action but no back and forth action. IS this a bad turbo? And if its only a lil bad will it hurt if i go ahead an run it until i can get a upgraded turbo?

I think it also matters when it's a journal bearing vs ball bearing

then you have journal bearing... from what I been told, journal bearing shoudl not move AT ALL. Maybe someone else can confirm this.

if you're looking at upgraded turbo, looking into turbo manifold, dump pipe and look into the divider thingy between internal wastegate/ exhaust turbine. Do a search, that's what I'm looking into as well
