How much shaft play should a turbo have? I bought a new one and it has a little play. I hope this isn't a problem but I've never seen how much play a "good" turbo should have b/c this is the only one that I've really messed with.

When you say new do you mean "brand new" or "something newer than I had"?

The compressor wheel should move side/side a little bit. There should be no noticeable in/out movement..

its normal for a new/rebuilt turbo to have slight shaft play. once its spinning and the oil gets to it it will be tighter. what are the specs on that turbo anyway

Looking good but it has no writing on it other than the A/R... Hope you don't tell us it is something you saw on ebay that was extremely cheap!

Quote »its normal for a new/rebuilt turbo to have slight shaft play. once its spinning and the oil gets to it it will be tighter. what are the specs on that turbo anyway [/quote]How much is slight 1/32", 1/16"?After much reworking of my manifold, I started noticing an occasional high pitch ringing when the engine is reved. I thought it was a loose screw or something but listening closely to the turbo I suddenly heard a "ZZZZZ Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z" from either the compressor or turbine. I pulled off the intake and I could move the compressor side to side by a 1/16" or so. There is no in/out play but the side to side is enough to make it hard to turn if I push the compressor to one side. This was a brand new (Phoenix turbo) T3/T04E 2000 miles or so ago. This does not seem to be normal. It was getting oil, cause I disconnected the feed line, cranked the motor (fuel pump disconnected), and it spat oil into a jar. I have a -3 AN feed line and a -10 AN return (used to be -6 AN but replaced due to that forcing a little oil out the seals). Is this turbo shot already, how/why?

a little shaft play in a turbo generally means that it slightly moves. i can't quantify what that number since i have always gone by sight and feel. it sounds like to me that Ligouri Rd has more than just a little shaft play going wrong with his turbo. It could be a bad bearing inside the cartridge.

When it was forcing oil past the seals, was that on the current turbo, or was that a different turbo?
