Ah so close, i took my car out on the road for the first time since this late feb. In my neighbor hood theres a nice long straitaway that i always test my cars on. My KA held boost well, i had a 3 psi wastegate spring in. Well, second pass as the straitaway, right after i got off of boost i hear a little pop and a puff of smoke comes out of my engine bay. So i stop, and in about 5 seconds theres so much smoke around me i couldnt see out the window. No power loss, no change in the engine at all. Drove it back to my shop, jacked it up, oil in the DP.

From what i know I think that my hotside oil seal blew. Its a cheap turbo, XS power T3/T4 50 trim .63 ar. About a year ago i bought a kit that i confused with XS engineering...

Im still thinking that theres nothing wrong with the turbo itself, i just needed a restrictor. Like a .60 or maybe a little bigger. I guess some turbos can get away with no restrictor and some cant.. From now on for me, im running one in all turbos, no reason not to.

I also noticed after i changed my oil to a full syn a jump in oil pressure. Not a huge one, around a +10 difference.

Would a Garrett rebuild kit work?

Any thoughts guys?

Im starting to think that this happend because of the McMaster DIY oil return system i set up. Does anyone know if that much oil could have gotten through the seals because of oil backing up in the turbo?

What kind of dammage, if any, am i looking at repairing?

Im hoping just to order a JGS oil return kit, let all the oil burn out of my DP/turbo and it might be good again. Sound possible?

First im just gona try burning all that oil out after i put an oil restrictor on it.

Hey, I used to work at a turbo shop and we saw a lot of the ebay turbos come through. We always put a garrett cartridge in them and reused the housings. Cost was anywhere from $295 to $450.

Get that seal and go boosting

Good luck burning that oil though!!! you will be "spy hunting" oil smoke cover for a long time!!Get that drain fix, put a restrictor, change the seal and try again!!As for damage itself...dunno that you hurt the turbo. Also, dont pay for that...DIY!!!Its only.....up to 15.00 for a seal!!!

Thanks alot for the responses guys, i guess ill be taking my exhaust mani off here this weekend.

I read on JGS's webpage any engine that produce more than 50 PSI of oil pressure should run a .60 restrictor. My KA with full syn runs over 65 under load, and i cant see how the rest of you guys would be to far off from that number.

What does a cartridge consist of? Im guessing atleast the center section of the turbo, anything else?

Yea believe me if i had known what i was getting myself into with XS Power i would have never gotten it. Learn from your mistakes and move on, atleast this wasnt to expensive of a mistake.

Oh and you can bet its gona be a DIY rebuild . I didnt come this far only to pay some guy to rebuild the heart of my project. Good thing to learn, i have a t25 that needs a rebuild first, learn on that, then move up from there.

The cartridge is the whole CHRA with bearings. Cost depends on type of thrust bearing (270 or 360) and seals (dynamic, gapper or standard)As for the oil in your DP...lots of degreaser or Easyoff will dissolve that residue away.Flush with plenty of water afterwards

Turbonetics says a restrictor is the last resort. Always have the best drain setup you can, no bends, smooth transitions and large enough to flow the oil out of the cartridge. If you still have smoke, then definitely use a restrictor, but do that last.

Also, a little backup will make oil seep past the rear oil seal, what you're describing is a failure of that seal and probably the aft bushing.

Buy a Garret rebuild kit, swap out the internals and roll.

All the ebay turbo's can benefit from a seal/bushing swap. Then you have a turbo that's fairly reliable.
