Ok, now i knew that alot of the bolts/nuts would be fairly difficult to get at before i got started but at this rate i'll be an old man before this gets done. Anyone who has done this before have any hints on what might help to make things go a little quicker?

use an open-ended wrench. break your arm in several places and snake it in there. then, for lazyness dont bother to remove the downpipe and just try and snake the whole thing out in one piece. to do it this way, you will have to undo the engine mount bolts, wrap a chain around the turbo side of the engine and pull up on it with an engine hoist so you can make enough room to pull it all out.

unfortunately, i did it this way. somehow it only took me 3 days, and i only hurt myself several times. none of these injuries were bad enough to warrant going to the hospital, so i seem it a success.

and if you want to do it faster, air tools are your friend.

really though, with an open-ended wrench you can turn every one of those bolts. youll need them in varying lengths, as some bolts are conveniently inaccessible with the open-ended wrench you used to remove the one next to it. it will take a while, but it can be done. youll be able to get it back on in a few hours with the knowledge you will attain during removal. oh, and be afraid of the oil and coolant lines. be very, very afraid. im so mad at myself for cheaping out and not buying some braided stainless ones to replace them with.

It takes me a few hours to remove it. I take the turbo and manifold out in one piece. I find its much easier this way since there are little tabs by the exhaust flange that keeps the nuts that hold the turbo to the flange from turning.

The first time I removed my manifold and turbo I also removed the coolant lines. From then on, any time I had to take my turbo back out with the manifold, it would take 5 minutes.

I briefly considered taking out the manifold and turbo all in one big chunk, but it looked like it'd be just as tough if not worse so i decided against it. I won't be able to work on it much for the next few days, with class and work and what not but hopefully i'll have her done by the weekend.

take the manifold/turbo/o2 sensor/coolant lines off TOGETHER!:) It only took me about an hour to get mine off when I had the motor in the car... its much easier that way!

Man, it looks like the bottom manifold bolts would be pretty tough to get out but i'll definately give her a shot the next time i get some spare time to work on it.

Yea they are a pain, remove the coolant lines first and it makes it 1000x easier to get your hand and the wrench in there.

Find a midget small enough to stand in your engine bay and talk him into working on your turbo. :)

The first time i pulled a turbo those "2 bolts" under the manifold took like 2 hours and i already have a wide range of 14mm wrenches (everything u can imagine).

I'm planning on pullin an all-nighter on it between thursday when i get off work and friday morning for class. Thats like 8 hours of time right there and if i can't get it done by then, i will start my search for a turbo swap loving midget.

I was just gonna keep it. It's no good, seals are bad and there is a moderate amount of shaft play.
