First of all, this might be a dumb question because the answer might be obvious; I'm just hoping that the obvious answer isn't the correct one. The wheels on the turbo I'm about to install spin freely, and it has what seems to be a minimal amount of shaft play, both side-to-side and in-out.

However, if I put some sideways pressure on the wheel, and spin it, I can hear the turbine wheel grazing the side of the housing. This is only if I put pressure on the wheel when I turn it; without any pressure it spins perfectly fine.

Bad turbo, or no?

Do you see any marks where it looks like it's made contact before? Any nicks on turbine? If not then slap it on for a while and use it til it blows, then upgrade.

Well, the thing is, it is an upgrade; a GTiR T28 I bought used. After I swapped/clocked the housings as necessary, I noticed that the shaft play is enough to graze the housing occasionally (didn't do that before I swapped the housings). My stock T25 is perfectly fine, has plenty of life left in it

I'm gonna send it off to get rebuilt.

Isn't the GTiR T28 ball bearing? The price of a BB turbo rebuild is almost as much as a new GT28R FYI.

They're journal bearing.
