I’ve got a problem with my turbo and I need some good advise from people that know about this topic.

Here is the problem. I have an top mount turbo manifold with an t28 turbo, 28x7.5x2,5 fmic, 480cc injectors, S-afc, 3” full exhaust, walbro 255lph, and turbonettics external waste gate.

Now the t28 has a lot of shaft play, and I really mean a lot. I’ve tested the engine before I bought it and I did not see it smoke or anything, but with that amount of play I’m sure it will start smoking for sure. Now I know the gt28 is the best turbo I can use, but I already have a t3/34 that fits perfectly on my manifold, the trim is a/r. 50 – a/r 63

Anyway my question is how good is the t3/t4 for the ca18detI bought the turbo from a guy how had it on his ca18det, and his manifold broke, and he changed and went back stock. All I know is that it started spooling between 3500and 4000 rpm. But I don’t know at what rpm it will be at 12 to 13 psi. I don’t want to be getting the full power till after 5200rpm. My goal is to boost 17/18 psi, but first I’ll need to have everything in place, but that’s something else.

I’ve been told that such a big turbo will give me problems with some things. Fuel cut, air flow meter, ext.

Now I’d like to know the pros and the cons of this t3/t4 set up and if I should stay with the t28 at stock boost for some months and then buy a gt28, if I can get the money. I’m trying to sell the t3/t4 but I did not have much success with that. So I’m thinking of keeping it, since I have the down pipe and all. But I don’t want to have problems with it, cause it is my daily driver.

Please help me with the right info, so I can do the right thing for now.Thx.

First of all, if this your daily driver, then Yes, you won't be happy with your T3/T4 because of the size of the back housing (For starters). If you're looking for bragging rights on the dyno, then depending on it's trim, it should assist you with bragging, but I caution you with those injectors up and around 17-20psi (not going to cut it). If you're using the stock AFM, it will get maxed-out quickly and you risk blowing your engine if you don't know what symptons to look for. Get you a .48 rear housing and go enjoy your T3/T4. There are other technologically advanced turbos that do better than a T3/T4, but if price is an issue, stick with the T3/T4. All depends on what kind of power you want and at what boost levels you're hoping to achieve them. Any turbo with a .63 rear housing on a CA18DET is for the performance monster and not the every day guy that wants a fast-spooling turbocharger and at the same time likes to listen to his BOV. If this is what you want, get you a Gt25 or something to that effect and make sure it comes with a relatively small backhousing. Hope this helps in your decision making and most of all, good luck at whatever you decide.

look i don't really mind a bit of turbo lag, cause when i'm on the strip i'll only be running in the high end. but i don't want to be getting the the like 10psi till after 5000 rpm.it you know. when an i going to get the power if i use my t3/t4. and what problems would i get when boosting 12psi?
