i got in the car started it, and noticed the idle was at 2000. i waited to see if it would go down but i didnt so i took off down the street. I got maybe a couple hundred yards down the street and then it made a real big bang (it souned like someone hit my motor with a hammer.) I pulled over and popped the hood and nocted the vacuum line that connects to the wastegate was not on there. I connected it back and started it up and the car runs like crap. I also noticed white smoke coming from the exhaust. I looked at the turbo and there was some oil on it. Is the head gasket gone or maybe the turbo ? I jsut need some peoples opinion. thanks

So what you are saying is that you were driving and the wastegate actuator line became disconnected. In that case the turbo was free to make as much boost as possible. I vote blown headgasket > blown turbo. Compression test the motor. If two adjacent cylinders are low, you have your answer. Also, white smoke would indicate coolant which is another sign of a headgasket blowing. I heard a V8 blow a headgasket and it sounded like a shotgun going off, so the noise might have been accurate as well.

Yes it did sound like a gun going off. Well not really what i wanted to hear but im glad i got a answer, head gasket probably need to be changed anyway. Anyone know where to order a metal one or decent one. ? thanks c-rad for the quick reply.

your running a T28 if your wastegate acuator wasnt hooked up that means you put around 15psi or more through it, that loud bang was probably an intercooler pipe blowing off, had it happen to me on a hot lap around the block at work yesterday. the car will run like crap and blow black smoke. check your piping before you gett to worried about headgaskets and turbos blowing

Be honest, how long and hard did you drive it like that? Down the street could mean take it for a mean spin. In any case, if it made the bang within about 100yds, then possibly you blew off an intercooler pipe (check all couplings). But in another case, that loud bang and white smoke will indicate that you have not only burned a fire ring or two on the headgasket, but it also usually tells you that you just cracked a couple of piston ringlands. It is very important that you check the intercooler piping well before you decide to tear off the head. Do a compression test to determine if your internal components have been breached. If compression tests yield horrible readings, pull the motor, pull the pistons and inspect them well.

I know about the bang and white smoke because I have done it a couple of times and it wasn't no intercooler pipe or blown headgasket .

Check your oil to make sure there is no coolant resdue in it, if it looks creamy color, your headgasket is blown.

As others say, if you wastegate actuator wasn't hooked up, it means you were running too much boost which could be desastress for the engine. as you can easly detonate it.

Leak down test will give you much better results than a compression test. Also, as boost boy said, check your intercooler piping before you start tearing into the engine. Also check your spark plugs for signs of detonations or coolant.

haha, I had a friend that was drag racing a pulsar and the same thing happened... he hit 1.5 accidentally and yes he said he heard the gunshot sound... his little pulsar was white smoking out the entire parking lot...lingering clouds of smoke...not dissapating like a white smoke from radiator, well maybe it was a combo of both but yes... sounds a lot like a blown head gasket.
