I've got myself two SOHC blocks from a friend of mine, one is a block, the other is an almost complete engine (missing small stuff, but I can always get it at junkyard). They have 70k and 130k on them respectively.Counting the engine currently in my engine bay, I have 3 1/2 blocks. Now with the two I have, what would be the steps of preparing them for turbo. I am talking about JUST the block preparation, i.e no boost gauge suggestions or alike. I want to run no more than 15 PSI, and probably no bigger than t4 turbo. I'm not sure if that matters, but I want to basically make the engines like new and then turbo one, and have one as a backup (so I can have two engiens ready for turbo), in case somethgin happens, and one engine just renew and have it as a stock NA engine, but with plans of making it a 200-250 HP at the crank, so it's just a strong NA engine. Again, what are the steps involeved (like what kind of internal work, etc) to make en engien turbo ready?any input (except derrogatory) is welcome.

I realized I made it confusing, so the layout again: 2 engines prepped for turbo, one just strong NA.

No e-mail, come here and read it if you want it. Here's a list of part's you need to replace to go turbo. If you're going to be running nitrous on stock internals, don't give it more than a 50 shot.

-Blow off valve-Intercooler-Multichecker-Turbo timer -New injectors-Fuel pressure regulator-Fuel pump-Intake-Headers-Exhaust-Oil pan gasket-The turbo itself

ehh...you guys, I really appreciate oru input...but can anyone give me actual advice on engine rebuilding? Like what to do with the pistons I have, and the rods I have, and which one are good to get if I go turbo, or what rings I get, what gasket (head or otherwise), etc? anyone?

Im fairly certain that with a standard overbore the blocks could handle 200-250 crank HP. So just clean it up and make sure there are no cracks in it. I believe a GOOD machine shop could even stress test it. Now your stock rods probably wont handle more than 200 HP, so those will have to go. And for turbo, you will want to lower your compression a bit with custom forged pistons. Im not certain of any final compression ratio needed for turbo. Headwork, i would look at new valve guides and seals and try to find some titanium springs that can handle your boost levels. Happy motoring!

Wow he asked for block prep and you gave him everything but...

As JNM said, you'll need lower compression pistons. Also new connecting rods. You'll want the block checked, cleaned up, and overbored. The head you want new valve springs, if you want new valves. You'd most likely also want the head ported and polished. Most people for their final compression ratio look for 8.5:1, some like 9:1, but if you're going to be running high boost, go for the lower of the two.

I forgot, you'll also want all new gaskets (i.e. metal head gasket), ect, all the stuff for a rebuild. Also proper piston rings.
