The motor you speak of should be the VQ35 because I belive it became standard around 99/00. before that there was the VG30E in the pre 93's and the VE30DE every year after that. The turbo VG30 you speak did in fact come out of a FWD but wasn't exactly a "FWD" motor like that of the SR20 or any other FWD only motor. The VG's on the other hand where pretty much transversal for both FWD and RWD applications. Hence why the turbo Z31 motor will drop right into the 89-94 max with no problem once so ever. Well, you might have a bit of a clearance issue with the turbo and raciator fan shrowed. But it's nothing you can't quickly overcome in a matter of minutes. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

That's not quite accurate:

A 1999 Maxima would have had a VQ30DE, not a VQ35DE.

The Z31 300zx came with a VG30ET even in the US.There was also the VG30DETT from the Z32 300zx.The Maxima and Z traditionally shared blocks, with the exception of the VE.

The Japanese equivalent of the Maxima (the Cefiro) was available with a VQ30DET--the turbo version of the 99 Maxima's engine.

US models:

2002-current Maxima---------VQ35DE1995-2001--------------------VQ30DE1992-1994 SE----------------VE30DE1989-1991 SE-----------------VG30E1985-1994--------------------VG30E1981-1984--------------------L28E (in both gasoline and diesel configuration)

If you're looking to build a FI VQ, you don't need to expend the effort of locating, securing, and importing a VQ30DET. There are plenty of aftermarket forced induction options available for US VQs.

You may be able to find a Cefiro VG30DET around here. Another member picked one up in TN and put it in his 3rd gen. Probably have to look around to find one.
