Well in transportation class, we're building custom go karts using lawn mower engines. Everything including the frame will be built from scratch. Our problem lise in the power department.

We've spotted 2 motors that a lot more powerful than ours. The first motor is still in the tractor(14hp). And the second one is an already race prepped 20hp engine runnin on alcohol(big threat).

So now we're outclassed since our motor is a mere 8hp. We came up with mods that we could do(ie. porting the intake and exhaust, etc), but that still may not cut it. Then we came upon this http://www.mjmturbos.com/images/SMALLEST.jpg BAM!!! Thats just what we need. I just dont know how to order it.

Does any1 know of another place that sells turbos similar to this one? We're still gonna to the mods we were planning before so this thing is gonna really move.

Any help PLEASE?

PS: Any other lawn mower modifications are DEFINATELY appreciated.

kthx:)

Hey did ya think about using a Yamaha KT100(not sure bout the KT) or 125 engine. The house I lived in at Purdue ran in the Grand prix go-kart race(pretty competitive) We had like 5-6 KT100's and had them built and dynoed they came out between 18-22hp and their much lighter than a B&S. The 125's put out significantly more hp probably around 26-30 or more. The ones that come in shifter carts are extremely fast, the carts can run 125MPH or more. Their all 2-cycle so if that's allowed that's what I would do, they are designed for carts & high performance. You can get a used KT100 for around 3-400, and a new bluprinted one for 1450. Not sure about the 125's. Good luck with whatever you do.

Can you just swap out to a bigger motor? I'd be tempted to do that and to deck the head (should be cheap at a machine shop) and then run some race gas in it with advanced timing. In my simple mind, that'd help you pick up some, especially if you ported out the head a bit.

Yea those kinda motors arent allowed. We have to use lawnmower engines. We can go bigger, but then we'd have to redesign the rear end. I can probably pick up a used motor from a shop nearby though.

Is the lawnmower bottom end good enough for boost?

Just about anywhere, garage sale etc. people throw them away all the time when they get old or stop starting easily. Most of the time you can buy an old mower with like a 3.5 B&S engine for 20-30. Great way to get some fundemental uderstand of 4cycle operation.

most libraries have hella books on small engine repair, and there is usually a high school that offers evening classes like once a week in small engine repair for a small fee (this is also a good way to learn autobody or welding).

It would coast faster than most cars drive, and wouldn't get any traction whatsoever when the gas was pushed. Fun? No.

depends on your definition of fun.

if fun involves tire smoke and near death experiences, then it would be good to go.

get an old gas blower, hook it up to the intake, just pull the trigger when you need boost

also, shave the head a little, stuff like that

He was talking about a leaf blower. And honestly, I don't know how much higher comp pistons would be. But then again you *could* shave the head, but be very careful.

if you do decide to shave the head, take VERY little off, it doesnt take much to raise compression, and if you over do it, then it will detonate

oh, and you might mix a little tolune in with the gas, as its equivelent to 114 octane
